What Did You Fly Today

Being old and somewhat colorblind I find a splatch of flourescent somewhere on the bottom really helpful. Don't look good or like some of the planes here, but, I can see it and I know which way it is going. Works wonders even in snow, even if it prangs into a snowbank.

Used to use international red on my tailfeathers until I discovered flying wings. Hmmm no tailfeathers

I've got colored packing tape I got cheap on Amazon. Doesn't stick as good as my HD packing tape, so I don't build with it generally. But it is great for adding color!

I've found the yellow especially easy to see of the ones I've tried so far. Red is good, blue can become one with the sky quickly with micro aircraft- 20" wingspan and down.

Cold, very soggy under foot, total grey low overcast but remarkably calm so I took the opportunity to fly my all Depron Ballerina.
Normally the Ballerina is a conventional 'built up' balsa/ply 53" sports aerobat designed by Peter Miller for a 35 two stroke and weighs about 70 oz, however my electric version built from the same plans weighs just 18 oz and as a result flies really slowly.

Quite aerobatic yet easy to fly as it gives you plenty of time to react particularly for the landing so on grass it gets away with no undercarriage.

My ballerina is built exactly to Peter Miller's plan so it has a span of 53" (1.346m) and is 43" (1.042m) long.
Being so light it only needs a Emax 2822 1200kv brushless turning a 9x6 prop, a 30A no name ESC and a 1500mAh 3s.
It originally had P51 style retracts and used a 2200mAh 3s.

However the field I use is very rough with long grass so after just a few flights that always resulting in a "nose over" landing it was converted to its present no UC hand launch/belly land configuration. It lost just over 4oz in the process!

Carnage at the field.....but it was all for a charity Christmas gift fundraiser! Sacrificed my Flying Fortress and Bushwhacker to the paint ball gods to raise money. They were using yellow paint, so the yellow plane doesn't look too bad, but it was pummeled with at least 30 close range hits. That shipping tape wrapped DTFB really can take a beating, still flies wonderful! Several full penerations. The interior was soaked.

I always have a favorite airframe, and most of the time it is a foam board plane. I had several planes costing over $400, but this simple stick, without gear or a hatch, outflies any of my others, as I am not scared of crashing it. It will do anything short of 3D, and I enjoy being told by the guys with the $ 1,500+ planes how well it flies.

That yellow plane is pretty cool! What is it?
I copied the design for the balsa version found on Outerzone and converted to DTFB. Using some Experimental Airline wing building techniques instead of the usual Flite Test, trailing edges are very sharp. Fantastic flyer, consistent 10min flights on 3S-2200 with C-pack motor.
I'll say the flight characteristics and paint ball durability are largely due to two long square carbon fiber tube spars.

Bushwacker kit was a nice plane, way back when. Probably really nice electric. Not bad as a slope glider, not successful as named.

Being an .049 freak, I consider 4 minutes to be optimum flight length using an oversize stunt tank.... long enough to get some fun in, short enough to not stain the armpits of my work shirts
