What about the new Turnigy 9XR due to be released in three months time? Already has it built in that you can reflash without the need for modifications or Smartieparts board. Still only going to be $50 as well.

Backlight is standard
Has inbuilt and module based antenna system
Button config makes sense
Spare parts avail from the start
Switch and pot quality far better than previous version.
433 LR module for the new 9XR
The 9XR has a pin-out in the battery compartment for easier flashing without needing to unscrew the case.
The 9XR is designed and built completely in-house
Though unfortunately it still uses pots and not sliders.
Overall seems like it will be great.
