What's your biggest frustration when designing an RC airplane?

Mint is Ubuntu based, it's just a flavor that is not natively compatible so I was playing in the terminal to get it to function, not a task I enjoy.

There are glitches, oddness and plain frustrating errors Lightburn has which the developers prefer to gaslight you when bringing them up. Those never get fixed with their updates and there are things that could use some improvement such as where they place some menu options they have not addressed, those would be things worth upgrading for.

You should not need a new license if you are just adding an additional machine, you can add up to four different machines under the same license.
I have been using Unix (many versions) since the early 80'S and linux since the mid 90's. (Many flavors). MS/Windows has always just been a necessary evil for me for the handful of tools that don't work on Linux, like the Flex Innovations Aura Configurator.

My first computer was a Commodore Vic 20, what a mighty beast!
Rockwell Aim65 here. 6502 based like the commodores, but no video. Just a 20 character LED display and 20 column thermal printer. Upgraded it from 1K to 4K and wondered what we were going to do with all that memory.

LOL! I asked my wife to pick up a hard drive from EggHead while she was in town. She called and said they didn't have a 10 Meg HD, the smallest they had was a 20 and I thought "What are we going to do with all that memory!" :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

That's an odd statement, they're not generally seen as softwares that compete against one another. One is a parametric modeler for more engineering-type applications, the other is a mesh modeler primarily for making pretty stuff.

I wouldn't do serious design work in blender, and I wouldn't do serious graphics-related stuff in Fusion 360.

Well, I wouldn't use Fusion 360 at all really, but that's a different conversation.

Blender does absolutely everything Fusion does including absolute precision on all levels but it does thousands more then what Fusion could ever dream of. They don't compare because Fusion is like a slingshot compared to a firearm, there isn't really a reason to compare the two since they are not in the same echelon of capacity remotely. I think Fusion downplays Blender because it's free and open source. From what I've used in Fusion, I wasn't impressed with at all, I'd be using FreeCad if I wanted something more primitive like Fusion.

That's why Fusion is frequently used for engineering/design work whereas Blender has practically zero presence in the engineering/design world. Feel free to see what other people online think about that, I know I did.

I'm not bagging Blender, I actually think it's awesome, but I'm realistic about what it is good at and what it isn't.

I am bagging Fusion 360. I know what it's meant for, but other than being free I think it's actually pretty crap as far as parametric CAD goes.

3d modeling SW needs to a) do what you need, b) be something you can afford (such and such package might be great, but no hobbyist will pay $5,000 a year for it), and c) work well with the way your brain works.

Both Blender and Fusion (it's just Fusion, they dropped the 360 about 18 months ago) can meet a and b, but only you, after trying them, can decide if they meet c.

I can use Fusion, Shpr3d, On shape, and several others, but have zero luck with Blender. Blender is perfectly capable with someone else, but I can't do a thing with it. If someone wants to sit down with me and get me properly started with it, I'd be indebted.

I'm looking at it objectively, and from a business perspective. It's entirely hype and status quo why Blender has not overtaken Fusion on the engineering world, the engineers simply have not taken the time to learn Blender. The hype with Fusion was strong emphasis upon team collaboration on projects, this is it's only merit and strength it has over Blender, it's only one being that, the average private user does not need that feature. What are we in the hobby really needing and using, and as it relates to it, we are just doing parts for 3d printers or a visual of the project to get a look at it before committing to laser cutting up additional parts for. I'm finding myself pioneering in the teaching element for Blender to make it more accessible to the beginner, this has been it's weak area. My background is with simpler, but in ways, similar software to it too, Moray Ray Tracer and Pov Ray, so Blender has been easier for me to pick up.

Thanx, I will go through it, give it an honest try, and report back. I'd love to add Blender to my repertoire; Fusion does what it does very well, but there are things Blender does better simply because it approaches some things differently.

No, it's not. Blender is not for engineering, never has been, never was intended to be. It's designed for computer graphics.

Conversely, Fusion is not for computer graphics, never has been, never was intended to be. It's designed for engineering design and manufacturing.

Can you make either one do the opposite? To some degree, yes, but they're not good at it.

Showing my age, but we used to use Windows Paint to do technical drawings out at work because it was the best we had.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with using what is available to you or whatever happens to agree with your budget, being able to improvise is highly useful.

However, in my opinion there is something wrong with choosing a hammer over a screwdriver to drive a screw and claiming that it is the superior tool for the job.

Guess we all feel strongly about our preferred CAD software. I'm guessing depending on your modeling workflow Blender or Fusion 360 could be better. There are add-ins for Blender that make it into a parametric modeling software, but personally, I would agree with Gadeirus that Fusion 360 is better for engineering in most use cases. However, if Blender works well, then there is no reason not to use it and it might be the better tool for certain things. Or if working with primitives instead of sketches just fits how you think better, then Blender is 100% the way to go.

Personally, I have used SolidWorks, NX, Fusion360, and a few other pieces of CAD software pretty extensively, and FreeCAD and a couple others some, and I'd have to say Fusion360 is my favorite in terms of what I'd want to use as a hobbyist because it keeps everything in one place and it's very easy to change things in any order instead of, for example, having to go back and forth between editing a part and an assembly. You can use it a lot more casually, I'd say and the various modify tools are great. On the other hand, the issues with stability, especially across different versions, mean that I'd hate to have to use it in a setting where I needed to fully define every sketch, and it's really not very good with assemblies despite me liking how it does them so if you actually needed to make a good assembly model of something more complicated, I could see it struggling.

It's the exact same XYz coordinates, same measurements regardless of how detailed and extensive the model may become. Is there another coordinate or dimension Fusion some how manages to cover that Blender does not?

Simple example - your tutorial is 16 steps long. In Fusion, the same model can be made in 2 steps.

I also took the extra step of making all the dimensions base on a parameter (a=20mm). This means I can define any mathematical rule I want to and by changing a single value, the whole model will update based on that. Since the extrude distance is a^2/40 this isn't a simple case of linear scaling which can be useful when you need to deal with lengths that depend on an area. For example, with A=60, the height is much larger compared to the width since the width increases by a factor of 3 and the height by a factor of 9.

There's more to it than that. Parametric CAD is math driven, Blender is a mesh modeler, all it can do is approximate geometry. For hobby modeling this is often sufficient, for engineering where precision and tolerancing matters it is not. Likewise, not having robust feature history is a problem, this is part of the reason I dislike Fusion as its feature history honestly kind of sucks.

Again, it's a lousy comparison to make. They are different types of software designed for different uses and they excel in their intended roles.

Can you design model airplanes in Blender? Yes, absolutely. Is it a better piece of software for that task than Fusion? No, definitively not.
