Willy Nillies Ace Littlest Stick Build

It's been about 5 or 6 years since I've built or flown, and I'm getting the itch again. When I stopped flying I was mainly flying large-scale planes, 1/4 and 1/3 scale. It was a lot of work and required plenty of gear for the gas engines, and I'm not sure if I ever want to go big like that again. Over the last month I've been flying some foam and balsa park-flyers and enjoying it, so maybe I'll stick with that and electric power just to keep life easy. The Kadet Senior may be about as big as I want to go.

So as mentioned in the title of this post, I'm also picking up building again, and decided to kick it off with a small/easy kit from Willy Nillies, the Ace Littlest Stick. There are a few choices in my stash, but the classic Stick is hard to beat for simplicity. About half of my WN kits are betas, hopefully they haven't changed too much for the final designs.

Breaking the seal on the package, there's no turning back now! The quality of the laser cutting is fantastic, and I only needed the knife to remove a few bits of the light ply formers, and the balsa parts almost fell out from looking at them too hard!

I'm not building for speed on this kit, which is good since all of my glue is completely dried up! An order for Titebond II, some CA, servos and other electronics is being put together, and I've obviously got all the other building materials from previous work. In the picture below the fuselage is just being held together by the friction-fit of the parts, no adhesives yet. I'm impressed with the design so far!

I don't get aggravated with building too often, but this kit is getting me there... Maybe I've been away from building for too long, or maybe I've got a BETA kit instead of regular production (my other Beta kits are marked as such). Here's what I'm running into:

- I haven't found any actual build manual or a build thread showing wing details. The fuselage was pretty easy, but the wing is a headache. There are a few pictures on the WN forum, but it's all very vague.
- The page included with the kit says the wingspan is 21.75", but my wing (without cutting it shorter) would be 28".
- If I remove two full "bays" at the end of each wing I'd end up at 21.75"
- The ailerons are sized to work on a 21.75" wing and would end up very short on a 28" wing. They'd work, but it'd look weird.
- The sheeting at the wing roots (to support the aileron servos and rubber bands) also make no sense.
- There are numerous extra ribs.
- Fuselage servo mounting is completely up to the imagination as there are no trays or info on how/where to mount the electronics.

So again, maybe I got a Beta kit, but it sure would be nice to see some kind of document showing what the designer intended. I'm leaning towards cutting the wing down to 21.75" which would solve some of the issues, and regarding the sheeting at the wing root I may just cut my own ribs and sheeting to do it how I think it would best work.

On the good side, the fuselage went together very easily. I ended up using Titebond II instead of CA which meant I needed to get creative to hold the sides together at the tail. CA would have made it much easier, but I just don't care for that kind of glue anymore.

It's good to be back......?

Have you reached out to WN? You may have received the wrong wing kit. (I’m out of town or I would check mine.) They sometimes have resources on their Facebook pages.

Suggest either tape or clothespin for the end of fuselage. Clothespin tends to put a boat prow effect, sometimes tape leaves a small gap.

Double ribs under sheeting, typically which would eat up 2 or 4 extra ribs, could eat 5 but thats super rare and only on British or German kits. Looking at you Graupner.

COULD I reach out to WN for info and possibly a new wing? Sure.

WILL I do that? Probably not. I'm hard-headed, impatient, and determined to make it work.

It appears that I'll just need to cut a few new ribs or just modify ones I've already got, and I'll then figure out the sheeting from there. I did see the wing pictures on the WN forum before I started this build, they helped confirm I had a weird mix of wrong parts. It would really be helpful if WN had at least a basic print or a couple diagrams for their various kits. The wing will be finished (other than electronics) fairly quickly.

First question do the ribs kinda fit the fuselage hole where the wing goes?
Dang it, that's a key thing I didn't think of... 😖 A quick review tells me no, the wing is far shorter than the saddle. My previous glances at it were also accounting for the ailerons, which obviously wouldn't extend into the fuselage, so I didn't notice it. Well crap, I guess I need to reach out to WN to see if they can identify which wing I have so I can buy a fuselage to go with it. Might as well make lemonade out of this lemon...! 😄

To WN's credit, the wing really holds together nicely without any glue. However, this still doesn't account for all of the ribs I got with this kit.

In looking at the various kits on the WN site I've narrowed it down to two of them which may use the wing I received, hopefully they can figure it out based on the pictures I have shown above.

I reached out to WN via their website last weekend. They do sell the Littlest Stick wing kit on their website and instead of asking them to just send it to me I asked if they would include with another kit & accessories that I'm willing to purchase.

In the meantime... if I don't start building something I'm going to pack it all up for another 5+ years, so I opened up the Super Sport 250 kit that's patiently been waiting. So far I think I've figured out all of the hurdles found from building without plans, although it sure would have made the process easier. As you can see, I elected to build the low-wing without dihedral. Landing gear has not yet been decided, although I'm leaning towards going without for simplicity. Electronics have also been delivered, and all I'm waiting for is the motor mounting screws which should arrive in a few days.

As with the Littlest Stick, the quality of the laser cutting and the fit of the parts is top-notch.

Have to exciuse me sinvce I seem to be getting rather senile: As I understood your last post, you now have a possible spare fuselage for the spare wing?

For the Littlest Stick kit I've got the fuselage, but not the right wing kit and I have no idea what wing I received with the Stick. On the previous post I mentioned that WN sells the Littlest Stick wing kit by itself which would fix the problem, but I'd prefer not to pay for it as it was missing from the kit I bought.

In the meantime I'm just building the Super Sport 250 kit (pictured in my last post).
