A list such as this must include the very first airplane. Produced and then flown by Wilbur and Orville Wright on December 17, 1903, their gossamer-winged aircraft made possible the first controllable and sustainable, heavier-than-air human flight.
The Wright's were not the first plane flying controllable.
There are at least two more telling they were first but the Wright Brothers as Americans were on the right place to be put in the history books.
Try to read about Otto Lilienthal and you will find that he flew heavier than air planes a lot earlier.
Wrights were first in the books with a motor/propeller driven plane.
