YC 14 Winter Project

Yeah, I explored it with a prop and the only use was I could back up the plane and turn it(using the rudder) on our narrow runway. For landings, by the time it went into reverse, I was almost stopped.

My real hope was that I could use it for flying 4D. I even had an APC prop that I bought that they designed so that the thrust was almost the same regardless of direction. ESC didn't advertise that there was a delay of time involved.

See you made the exhaust nozzle oval. Very interested in outcome. Did experiments where exhaust nozzle is sliced at an angle which causes plane to pitch up.

Are you aware of this gentleman's work? One plane does it all from STOL to acrobatic and can be flown in the wind with authority. Also check him out on RC Groups. He definitely knows what he is doing.

i built his bushtrottel a couple years ago, because of how his flew, but mine flew like garbage. idk what i did wrong, or i'm a lousy pilot

This looks awesome! Any chance of plans when all is said and done?
Probably not. I never did plans and this would be similar to a masters series.

I am building from publicly available plans for a paper model which are blown up by 355%. That’s sort of the best starting point. You can buy these plans online for about 10 bucks or so.

Slow but steady progress. The main fuselage is cut. And parts have been glued. Most electronics have also arrived. This will be a massive bird.

Finished the elevator build today. Next stop is the rudder section.

Because of the split Elevator I have put a servo reverser into one side. Not too happy about that. I am using digital servos. Will see whether I can get this reversed by programming.

Tail section is done. I kept the servo reverser for the one elevator. Tested that quite excessively as the first reverser was faulty and locked the servo after a few inputs. Used a different brand after that.

Will start with the wing next. The wing will have three sections with the center piece being fixed to the fuselage and the outer wings being removable for transport.

Are you keeping track of all the hours put into building the plane?

Not really. I mostly build on weekends and only a few hours in order to have time for the family. I guess at the end I will probably have spent 100-150h. What takes me quite some time is to figure out how to get things working the way I want to without having plans for that (i.e. for getting the rudder and elevator together, strengthening the structure (remember I build from the plans for a paper model which is effectively just the outside hull), getting the surfaces to move and including the electronics I spent about 15h). On the other hand, cutting the foam board and putting pieces together goes reasonably fast.

Wondering what to do about the flaps. Have tried different techniques in the past. Stumbled across the video on double slotted flaps. I have also bought special flaps hinges. Wondering whether I should go for RCnerds version or whether I should try a combination.

Go for double slotted. Be sure you design so it is to scale and re-enforced enough mount to wing so one doesn't rip out. When I experimented with mine, 3 crash heights and I ended up slowing(transmitter) the motors of the servo to slow down flap movement.
