My daughter gave this Guillow's Piper Cherokee Kit # 307 to me as a gift many years ago. After she and her husband acquired a Cherokee 180, I decided to build it as a display model of her Cherokee 180. Through many phone calls and a lot of pictures for reference we came up with a plan for the model. The most obvious visual difference is the addition of a third window on each side of the cabin and since the 140 kit only has two, I started with an upgraded profile. The kit comes with light balsa to save weight and I wanted strength for a durable display model. I decided to use the plans to fabricate the parts from 1/16" aircraft plywood and sheet the entire model with balsa and cover with iron on vinyl. I have inserted text on most of the photos for easy build display.
This build was done back in Dec 2012 and Jan 2013. I wanted to share it then but didn't know how. The pictures are also posted in an album in the media section. The base is made from oak. The wiring harness and voltage dropping resistors are inside the base. The power comes from a 12 volt battery box in the base or a 110v-12v adapter that plugs in the back of the base. Switches are Landing Lights - Strobe Lights - Navigation Lights - Cabin White - Cabin Red - Engine Start - Throttle . The model is mounted with a 1/4-20 camera tripod swivel adapter with the wiring to the base through three color coded plugs.
The compass rose on the base is painted on the tarmac at the airport in Sante Fe, NM. The 99 in the center is the logo of the 99's, a women's pilot organization. Emelia Earhart was the first president of the organization. My daughter is an active member of the local chapter.
