Making progress on the wing! Did some reinforcing and also made the decision to skin the wing. You can see in the last picture I started to fill in the wing tips with balsa and smooth them up with filler.

I will be adding flaps and the two servo pockets closers to the center section of the wing. Just waiting on some more supplies to come.

So far I've been having fun with this build! So much so that I've picked up another project that I will start after finishing the MM P-51

This is a Hyperion P-51 that was never finished. The fuselage is fiberglass and the wings are balsa with covering. The fuselage is very well detailed with rivets and panel lines. My plan is to get very detailed with this plane also. So far the plan will be to add flaps, steerable/retractable tail wheel, and skin the wings. This P-51 will be wearing the Bud Anderson Old Crow paint scheme.

Here's the cock pit all detailed! The pilot is from park flyer plastics. It had to be modified quit a bit to fit properly. The arms and hands I made from styrene plastic.
I'm slowly making progress on the wing. I was able to build and install the flaps. I'm working on the servo mounts now. I decided to flush mount the servos with covers. A couple of other balsa builders were talking about doing this on the EVA and I liked the idea. I hope to have pictures of the wing progress tomorrow when thing are finished and looking a little better!

I'm a little bit jealous, that cockpit looks great! I was thinking I'd just spray mine flat black and call it good but you're making me want to do better! I don't know if I'll go as far as putting in a pilot, but I may try to paint some details and maybe do a little gauge cluster.

Looking good! I've been lazy, need to get back on mine. I got a little hung up on the gear mounts but it's nothing serious. Mostly just lazy!

OK maybe one more assembly before paint! Just making sure everything is in order. I'm glad I did too I've made a few changes to make it even better. I gotta say thou it's been hard not to rush it and call it good enough like I sometimes do with foam models. But man it sure has turned out great!

Forgot to mention. It weights 37 ounces with a 2200mah 3s battery. Right were I was figuring. What do you guys think paint will add? And how do you think it will fly?

Thanks Guys! Working on paint now! I'm taking it slow so it turns out nice. Right when i thought it was ready for paint i decided to change a couple things and i'm happy i did! I've been working on the next project a Hyperion P-51. Removing covering and starting to sheet the tail feathers. I will probably start a build thread on it soon. This project should take me to the flying season then i'll get back to building some DTFP during the summer. I've had a lot of fun with this build and i'm already looking forward to doing it again next build season. The hard part will be picking a plane. I've had my eye on a few kits. The Keith Sparks 40" P-47, Mountain Models 48" J-3 cub, Tom van Haarens 46" P-39 Aircobra. I'm leaning towards the 46" P-39. Any other warbird kit suggestions would be appreciated something 40" or bigger.

Mmmmmmm, balsa.

It's more of a pre-war trainer, but Hostetler has plans for a nice PT-19. Wingspan is 114". How about that?

I don't know if that for me? Building just from plans! I'm kinda liking the precut kits and then modifying them to my liking. For now anyway. I've been looking at them Cambrian models and i like the 65" ME109 they have. Wish they had a US store!

Got the silver aluminum base color on! This silver has been a challenge to work with its a Krylon Maxx spray can that looks really good. But it goes on to dry and if you slow down a bit its to wet and starts to fish eye there's no happy medium. So it took a bit more paint than I'd liked to get the right coverage. Also after three days of dry time it seems a bit tacky yet. My plan is to do a battle hard war torn look with lots of weathering! Hopefully it works out.

Silver does always seem hard to work with. There was a guy I used to fly with who painted an Ohio Pepsi Chipmunk silver and it never dried. He ended up stripping the entire thing and starting over.
