Baby Blender - Scratch Build

What type/kind of paint are you guys using to paint foam board? Also, what type of masking tape are you using to tape off paint designs?

Thanks.

I use Tamiya acrylic model paints matt, thinned 100% with isoprop alcohol, thin coats x3 (see my pics post #110). Don't put paint on thick as the paper of the foam board will soak and ripple (see previous posts regarding others experiences with too much paint) you then get the finish you like i.e. satin, gloss or matt. using clear cheap spray from the hardware shop or art shop.

You can purchase 'low tack masking tape' I use that but before applying it to the foam board, I apply it to glass peel it off and apply to glass again, this reduces the stickiness even more, It almost falls off with the pressure from the airbrush, If that causes it to lose too much tack try apply directly to foam board, incidentally, I have also had good results with normal masking tape and using the apply & re-apply to glass method.

Don't leave the masking tape on overnight.

Hi there, a big fan of the series since I discovered your site, and truly in love with your swappable series, build already the Flyer, Delta, Old Fogey and now in the process of finishing the Baby, I'm having lots of fun with it!
Since I can't find the foam board you mention in Germany (so far I found 2 companies that make something similar: m2products.com in the UK and their sister company isopor.de in Germany, but only sell to companies apparently) I'm using High density 5mm Depron (http://www.farben-hilkert.de/) that so far is working pretty good.
I am doing some mods to this model, I wanted t know if someone tried to close the lower part of the fuselage? So far Ive closed the rear area, and planing to make a hatch in tha front. Also, I'm thinking of reinforcing the Landing gear support with a 1mm plywood. The last mod I have in mind is to glass most of the plane with 25 gr fiber and polyurethane acrylic after the experience I got with glassing my EZstar. Anyone tried any of this?
Here some pics of my process so far

Here is what I meant by closing the lower part of the fuselage, the front one is not glued, I want to install it with a hinge of sorts to be able to open and close to install the power pod

Please let me know your opinion, I am only starting on this hobby, and I have learned a lot from the comments in this forum!

Hi Villalji,

you live in Berlin, there is www.modulor.de too. They are selling foamboard with white paper on. Maybe you can fetch it directly from the store so you can save a lot of postage or use the larger boards.

Please report

Hey Villalji,
I just finished my blender and I closed the bottom rear of the fuselage with construction paper (same stuff as what I used for the turtle decks) and it worked great. And I also made a hatch in the front with construction paper and velcro. I also made a steerable tail wheel. With all of these mods it flies great! The one issue I have had is that it's borderline on the tail heavy side. But a slightly bigger motor or counter-weight would fix that with ease.

Thanks, komm that gives me more confidence to try it!
I will skip the tail wheel at the moment to avoid weight in the tail.

Finished my baby!!

I finished my bb today... Can't wait to maiden-crash...eeer fly it tomorrow ...
Total weight is 595 gr (21,25 oz) with a 3s 850 mah battery and 610 (21,78 oz) with a 3s 1200 mah. Is it ok, or on the heavy side?
Depron onlyFiber glassPaint Last layer
Body 70 84 90 94
Upper wing 59 71 74 76
Bottom wing 57 69 71 74
Wing supports 20 21 22 24
Total 206 245 257 268

(the pod with the electronics, wheels and servos account for the rest 327 gr)

I closed the underbody, made a hatch for easy access with the power pod, I installed the battery inside the pod and the ESC below it in the Velcro strip. I also covered the Depron with 24 gr fiberglass and acrylic polyurethane lack (3 layers in total), and i closed the wings. oh, I also doubled the wing supports with a BBQ skewer in between, also 2 more skewers bracing the two wings, they are super strong now. In the undercarriage, I used a piece of ply to make sure the wire does not trash the wings... Yes I'm not a very good pilot (yet)  I'm not strong on painting... Have to improve that part, but overall looks good.
Thanks again the flite test team and this great forum for the inspiration on the details.

Or pick up one of these.

For the price it can get tossed in the car as a spare, and not worry so much about it getting stepped on, dropped, or stolen. (If it's still showing the $126 price, ignore that. Add to cart, and it goes back down to $64)
