already in -66, SAAB in Sweden started designed a special fighter. US directions on what wanted of a tactical close air support/ground target attacking plane came in 1969 ... First in 1970, the USAF issued a modified, detailed request for proposals for such an aircraft.

Did they get the Swedish drawings? it seems could be possible......
Sweden ended the work on it at start of 1970..

Maybe Sweden was going the short field fast attack fighter route and it didn't perform as expected. The air force was looking for a different tasking for CAS and with the mods produced the A 10 from the ground work Sweden had laid.
