Just like many P-40's during the Pearl Harbor attack, she has seen ground fire and will fly once repaired.

... not fly only once when repaired, but once the airplane is repaired :p

Lol... I sure hope you're right about that! :black_eyed:

And thanks Patrick. I know I'm definitely motivated by the FT community. So much enthusiasm here. And there are times that I've thought to myself "I could just half-@ss this and it would probably be OK"... and then I've thought about it again and decided that I wouldn't want anyone to see it that way

Repairs continued a bit last night. Sanded down the patches on the wing and they are ready for primer. I decided to move on and deal with primer once ALL repairs had been done.

Got the tailwheel replaced. The unit had sheered the metal in several spots and it was easier to just replace the whole unit. I did save the actuator and a few other parts for spares in the event I have another issue with it in the future. Also had to reattach the gear doors and tweak the gear door mechanism. It was much easier to work on this time... you know, with the gaping hole where the tail feathers are supposed to be :black_eyed:

Last thing I did was get her lined up and bolted back to the fuse. The mounts are firm and didn't give way in the crash. The plan is to get the nose lined up tonight and evaluate what foam can be re-used and what needs to be replaced. I'll then put a sheet of wax paper between the fuse sections and the wing, get everything aligned just right, and use GG to reattach, taping the seams from the outside so it expands inward. Then it will be glass repairs over the seams. I may add a little bit of carbon tow or heavy glass strips across the inside seam as well for extra strength.

Or do like I do and hide the half-a$$ work with balsa filler! :)

More patch work underway. Foam tabs were added to bridge the torn foam and to give more surface for the GG to bite on.

There are still internal foam to be replaced/repaired but it is coming along. From the outside she is already looking a lot better.

Way to go! The more you make repairs like these the more you will have my attitude. When you crash, you kind of don't care because the repairs are so easy. Don't get me wrong, a crash on a build like this is a tough pill to swallow but it helps knowing that the repairs will not be anything like repairing a stick model.

I think it was a Keith Sparks quote when he crashed a model and some one asked why he was smiling. He said, "When I started building this was about 300 pieces, now it's just nine."

I may have to steal that one... I like it :p

Yeah, so often on Balsa builds you end up doubling your initial part count. That is a great quote.

Humpty Dumpty is getting put back together again one piece at a time. While gluing up the other half of the forward fuse I attached the wing to help keep everything in alignment. I'm hoping to get the tail feathers back on today. There is still some repair work to do internally for strength, and the cockpit will need some touchup, but getting closer.

Hooray!!!

Now we need to figure out where it's going to re-maiden, cause waiting for the Lorton field to open will put you out into 2018 :)

Will you be re-glassing the wing saddle area? It looks like the cracks might still be a problem if the foam is the only part holding the fuselage together.

I sure hope that isn't the case, but we'll see.

I can ask Kwan about using his field... that would be an option.

The plan is to reglass the seam and perhaps to glass some of the internal structure after it is replaced. I agree... I wouldn't fly her with just the GG seam holding her together.

I'm not sure how thick the foam is there but perhaps some toothpick inserts with gorilla glue followed by epoxy and carbon tow over top from the inside would beef that up nicely.
