Crickets chirping......

Boy, aside from Joker keeping us up to date with those awesome mega birds of his it's quiet enough to hear the crickets. If I could have only one R/C plane it would definitely be something HUGE like he's got! Alas, I'm poor and stuck doing the smaller birds until I win the lottery.

I'm 63 so staying inside is a smart thing and I'm keeping busy with a lot of 3D design/printing and balsa cutting. 3 different projects going at the same time and none nearing completion as usual. Though I'm in an Arizona hot spot I'm not sick at all (except maybe in the head) and hope the reason that posting has dropped off is NOT because some of our normal posters or any of their family or friends have caught Covid-19!

Here's hoping that all are doing well and this is just a lull in posting due to more important things happening than the hobby.

Good plan Joe, stay inside and safe. My work on planes is keeping me sane-ish these days. I'm a field sales rep, and normally I don't mind working from home occasionally, but it's been over a month now and I still can't go out and see my customers. Sitting behind a desk for days (weeks? months???) drives me nuts! My wife was laid off till maybe early next month, so she and the adult kids are also home all day, and getting away from everybody and playing airplanes is a nice release. At least they're all fairly quiet so I can make calls easily.

The more we're all locked up together the more I think Jack Nicholson's character in "The Shining" held it all together pretty well. :)

I agree with both of you! Crazy times. I have still been able to go to work although we have laid off over 90% of the employees so far at my manufacturing plant and we are not sure when the automotive orders are going to kick back in. I have had the option to do some of my work from home, but with the wife, kids and puppy at home, I am sure i would have "LOST" it by now if I had to be home all day, every day. I am thankful that I am still employed for now and still have the office at work to go to although we were just informed of a Temporary 25% pay cut effective immediately. Still staying positive that we will all get through this and get back to some sort of normal eventually.

Looking at your big bird posts helps me relive a time back to the late 70's when we used to fly at the San Diego/Del Mar fairgrounds east parking lot. There was a guy with an all orange beat up silk/dope covered 1/4 scale Tiger Moth with a very worn out (in his words) Quadra 35 motor. To this day I don't think I've ever seen anyone have as much fun flying as he had. He just kept saying "bigger is better". My BIG bird at the time was a Telemaster 40. Over the years I've accumulated many thousands of dollars worth of R/C stuff but in a heartbeat I'd trade it all for the right 1/4 scale or larger bird.

It seems like park-fliers are getting more popular while the big stuff is on the decline. Foamies are taking over, for better or worse, and those big planes can be found for great deals. When I went to pick up the Cessna AGwagon Monday night, a buddy went with me to pick up a plane from a different seller he found online as well. He got a 35% composite Yak 55 in decent used condition, no motor or electronics, for $140. It needs a few minor repairs, but new it was well over $1,000 plus motor plus electronics! The seller had it listed for a couple weeks and couldn't find a buyer. This thing is massive, and barely fit inside the rear of my Grand Caravan with the seats folded down.

Sounds like I'd better set my sights a little lower then. I'm dumping my slightly larger 2002 piece of MOPAR garbage 2002 PT Cruiser with only 51K miles for the even smaller but infinitely more reliable 2008 Scion xD with 206K miles that my daughter gave me rather than trade it in on her new Subaru Impreza. I had that Impreza for 3 days. OMG! What an overall awesome car! I wish I could afford one. The Scion xD in it's own way is quite a nice car especially since it didn't cost me a dime other than registration/smog test.....

Back to R/C. I'm not the least bit interested in glow power since 1999 going forward. Not worth the hassle, smell and mess. If I do go bigger it'll be gasoline only. That's why I keep looking in on Joker's posts.

I have been busy repairing a first gen 4Runner that I plan on using to haul my camper and planes around in so not much plane building. I have a big build coming up in the next few weeks and will add a thread soon.

I really, really, really wanted to like glow engines, but between the mess, the expensive fuel, and my inability to tune them properly it just wasn't worth it. Especially on the larger sizes. Gas engines in the 20-30cc range seem to be dropping in price, often cheaper than 8-15cc sizes.

I have noticed that it's rather quiet around here lately. Kind of the opposite of what I expected... but I guess there's probably not a lot of flying going on. I've been so busy myself I haven't had much time to be on here. At least im lucky, the free time I have has been spent flying! :)

Now back to dealing with this wonderful April blizzard... ah agriculture is fun!

I have been busy with my bashed Ugly Stick turning it into a 3D Larger rudder elevator and split ailerons programed for crow, and put a NGH 17 gasser on it now that is done, recovered, painted and programed it is ready to maiden. Finished up the Wayfarer servos put a 55 Saito 4 stroke in it the programing is done now so it`s ready for maiden

Now I am working on a stick built low wing 130-K 4 Star picked up at auction for $30 bucks 72 inch wingspan and putting a NGH 35 gasser in it reinforcing and pinning the firewall, setting up fuel tank, ignition, Opto switch, dual batteries and servos. I need to go over the whole plane and tighten up the monokote and do some color on it as it is all yellow hard to know top from bottom. Some times I think the only color people have is yellow yellow yellow for gods sakes it ain`t no Cub.. The other one I did stick built low wing I put a Turnigy 30cc in it and it was yellow too, sic sick sick of yeeellooooow. Must of been one heck of a sale on yellow during that time frame

It's a weird time for sure. My RC building progress has slowed a lot in the past couple weeks as I needed to rebuild my 3D printer (damaged in storage) and have been cranking out mask parts and working with the whole family to sew a couple dozen masks. Hope to get more time in the workshop for some RC stuff this week, but getting a couple pairs of masks shipped to all the friends and family, and a bigger box to the nurses in that circle, is coming first.
