Foam board specific cutting tools.

I tried to look around to see if this was posted already,
but did not see it anywhere, so forgive me if it is a repost....

These are a specific series of tools just for cutting foam board
like the DTF boards used in the swappable series.

I found the 90*/45* cutter at Hobby Lobby on the discount shelf
along with two packs of extra blades for 1/2 off marked price.
It makes me think HL will not carry them any longer though?....
but I found them for less than HL was charging on a few online sites
with a quick Google search anyway.

>>>>> http://www.foamwerks.com/tools/

I found the straight/bevel tool (90*/45*) to be quite useful for
cutting out the A/B fold channels, as you can set the blade depth
to exact, and infinitely repeatable cuts, that make removing the excess
very easy without damaging the paper on the outside of the channel cut.

They have a cut guide (ruler type with side wall) I would like to get my hands on too,
not to mention the double 45* cutter for ailerons and tail feather separations,
and the circle cutters look like they might be useful also.

I have no affiliation with this company, but I thought that for people like me,
whom have a very long winter building season ahead of us,
and intend to take full advantage of the time it provides to build
as many DTF planes as possible while the weather restricts our flying time,
it might be useful information.

I also found that Xacto has a 90*/45* foam board cutting tool,
but it seems that is the only foam board cutting tool they offer,
and my LHS did not carry it. BUT, the blades are the same as the Foamwerks
blades, so I will not be left in the dark when I need fresh blades!
(and they are reversible, like the HD "box cutter" blades mentioned in several FT videos,
and much more stout than #11 type blades)

Thanks for the tips, I've been eyeing the foamwerks' tools a few times but the price has put me off... There are others, but noone really cheaper (except for a totally failed cutter tool HK has, won't even link it).

I actually got that one to mod and once you get the thing setup and converted to regular utility blades, it works pretty good. But it's actually easier to bevel freehand.

Yeah, I am certainly not a math GURU, and for the time I spent using the tool so far,
I never quite figured out how to get a good 45* cut onto/after slicing my 90*.

But I have to say, it makes those A/B channel cuts with such precision that my hand could never duplicate!

That is why I think the double 45* might be nice for ailerons, flaps, and tail feathers,
all be it, I, as a matter of common practice, would still use some type of hinge-tape.

I do not, in any way, consider my DTF builds to have a limited life-span.
and I take all possible measures to insure their durability.

cheap and better

check out sailorjohn under authors for simple wood tools using razorblades ,the thinner blades work better and are very cheap as am I

Not much to show or tell...

It consisted of shaving a bit off the too long screws to tighten all the loose stuff and then drilling and tapping a new 3mm hole for blade placement so I can use more widely available utility knife blades. I had the socket head screw on hand so it didn't cost anything to convert it to normal blades. It's best for short bevels but it seems to work better now. I still find it easier to do the long bevels by hand.

Links to the tool, Pics, a Movie, and a How-To article or it never happened!

Seriously tho, would love to see the details on that tool/mod.....

Oh, and include PDF-tiles/full page prints, and Sketchup plans converted to vector art too please.

(shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes to do ALL of that,
and the DT foam board Mars rover plans for NASA too!)

Get on it BRO!

Or so help me, I will post the dueling banjo movie from Deliverance,
and that one has swear words in it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To buy a little time from the pig squealing , this is the tool from HK.

I'll try to get some pics up soon on the new hole for the utility blade in it.

Holy cow!

That thang do need a engineering degree and a tenure at NASA to use !!!

No Thanks, I will pass on any DT foam cutting tool that needs a 40 page manual to figure out! :black_eyed:

That tool looks more serious than these two guys:

I would still like to see your modz tho, xuzme720.

(just messing around, and I think you know that,
but I do like these two guy's rendition of the song)

I like that one, too. I think it's a true testament to MJ that every rendition done of Smooth Criminal seems to be great. One of my fav versions is Alien Ant Farms. I'm relieved, I figured I was getting ready to view some squealing when I clicked the link! :applause:
I will try to get a picture up for you, but truly, there is only one visible mod, and it's a new hole! Assembled as it came, there a few screws that bottom out before they tighten up. Those need some love with a file or some other removal method. I actually used a dremel on mine. Take a millimeter or 2 off and that seemed to be enough.

Alien Ant Farm? OH GOD!

What did I get myself into as a die-hard Led Zeppelin fan?

(searching AAF on Youtube as I type to hammer out some drills on my practice pad
between 5A and 2B sticks.....) :p

OK, that hurt a bit with the 2B sticks on my hard-board practice pad,
but I will visit AAF/SC again!

LOVE the way they rocked it!

I didn't mean to scare you. It's probably the only song from them I can name. And it's one of only a few of theirs that is any good.
My first earring was something like this:
pin-zep1.JPG
Bought it at the mall and pierced my ear sitting in Shakey's pizza after. Good times!

Of course I listen to a lot of different eras and types of music... hard to nail down a favorite now, but it's always rock at the top of the list.

Found something else for you:

Just for the record, violin isn't one of my mainstays as far as music goes, but I couldn't pass this one up!

I don't know if anyone ever posted this, but I found a cheap, simple, safe cutting tool from Harbor Freight. I buy the small disposable plastic utility knives with the break off tips. The regular price is $.49 but they are always on sale for as low as $.29. There are about 12 blades per knife which works out to ~$.02/blade.

These are great for straight cuts and really good for A B channel or 50% cuts. The blade can easily be adjusted for shallow depth for the 50% and channel cut, or extended for straight or 45° cut. The knife holder is plastic and feels good in the hand.
