Scale Build-Off – Northrop Gamma

So, I've been in love with the Gamma since I was a kid. One of my most prized possessions as a child was the Budweiser sponsored air racer piggy bank I had. Looked exactly like this one I found on Google images.

Such a beautiful plane in my opinion. And it reminds me of my childhood. So, why not design and build one, right? I started to do so and then I found wilsonman's Forum Build-Off Thread. What would make a better submission from me than my Northorp Gamma? I haven't gotten enough progress done on it to disqualify it so that's what I'm doing. :)

1/16 Scale

Length: 605mm
Wingspan: 995mm

I have already started the build but as the rules state, I am eligible since I haven't yet covered it. Since I'm not the greatest RC pilot I'll probably have someone else test fly it for me.

Anyways, here's what I got so far. Original progress can be seen in my design/build thread here.

I think I will set it up with my Park 300 I have laying around. Hopefully it will fly well. I have a feeling that the elevator is a bit undersized.

Full of...
Looking good. I like the landing gear fairings that you are using.

I bet it will look real good in the air. I hope your using the buweiser paint scheme.

Mmmmmmm, balsa.

Nice design to pick! I've got some old (60's) plans for a balsa control line version of the Gamma that I'll some day use.

Motorcycle blew a headgasket and as it's now cold weather season it's the perfect time to tear the motor down and replace it among other misc to-do list items.

I'll have the bike back together soon and progress will resume on the Gamma shortly.

The build looks great! Although the elevator looks fine. The rudder/vertical stab might want to be increased in size... Nothing worse than spending so much time on a build to launch it for it to immediately fly left and dive down into the ground! (i'v been there)

Hmm. I wasn't really worried about the Vstab. Rudder surface area and total area pass the 'gut feeling' check. I'll keep that in mind tho. I do intend on adding a bit of down and over thrust angle to my power pod to help fight torque rolling.

yes i did i will message you what i did so as to not jack your thread. love the gamma by the way cant wait to see it done

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a crazy build!
