Thanks guys!
Made some edits today. May get to play with it again tonight.
Once I have the process down it shouldn't be that hard to make one for Paul. That is if there are any shots of the cockpit floating around on the web. MustangsMustangs.com didn't have any real good ones. :\

I'll be on vacation this coming week, but I'll see if the EAA will be nice and let me take some pictures of the cockpit once I get back. If not, I have a few contacts that might have pictures.

Awesome! A "head on" shot of the instrument cluster would be cool as well.

Some more progress.

C3.jpg
Version 1,2 and 3. Well, what's left of 2 anyhow.

C4.jpg
Version 1 was very close to the original paper model only enlarged slightly. However it was still nowhere near what was needed to fit a FT Mini Mustang.
In version 2, I enlarged it yet again to better fit the space in the model. Much of the art has been changed at this point, either having more art add, details add or the art replaced all together. Photos were used for the instrument panel as well as the instruments on the side of the cockpit. Not that you can see that very well as I dissected it to benefit science...or art. Depends on how you want to look at it.
Version 3 has some slight size modifications as well as a few details moved around.

C2.jpg
Up close and personal with version 3.
Added the stick and modified the sight. The sheeting forward of the former just in front of the cockpit should not change much. However I do intend to incorporate the sheeting from the former back to the rear of the hatch with the canopy. Should make assembly easier.

C1.jpg
Here is version 3. I made the battery/radio area with two boxes instead of one as in the first two versions. I would like to add some wires etc for more interest.

Are there any other you'd like to see?

I thought about doing a little fighter dude. Maybe something from the waist up? But how to make it cheap, easy to do and repeatable by most community members out there? That's the question that made me just say no to figures.

Just some real quick cell phone shots of the P51 cockpit progress.

First is the new canopy which now incorporates part of the sheeting. Still have to see how that works in the end.
Version 4 of the cockpit sits in the background.

Last is the new battery hatch and formers for the cockpit.

Part of the fun of this (or any) project is researching the topic.
I found these. I believe they are from a P51 pilot handbook. I found them interesting so I thought I'd share.

You are a True Artist Rasterize, I am so very Impressed!!!

I am amazed at what you have done to the artwork for this plane. It is amazing!!! Thank you so much for the time and effort that you have put into making these skins for the P-51. I have built my first scratch build Mini Mustang and am getting ready to make my second with the artwork you have created. They are incredible. Can't wait to build it!!!

Thanks Rasterize!!!

Wake up! Time to fly!
Rasterize has done such a great job on this maybe one could be built and donated to that museum minus the electronics by one of the guys that lives really close to show support for old timers like that. Show them the RC community is fueled by the history of these awesome machines. I'm sure they have a bajillion drawings and pictures done by people of these planes so a 3d model might make it out to the floor in a show case even.

Thanks M2oseMarshall! The Mighty Mini P51's were some of my favorites to do. I look forward to making more after the Flite Fest craziness is over.

I have a question regarding the shiny look. Has anyone tried using aluminum foil as an option? I've thought about it several times thinking a silver bullet streaking through the air could be cool though maybe hard to see, but even so there are other graphics to compensate for that.
Anyone?

First: Raster -- DUDE. Awesome work. I visit the Palm Springs area often, I remember hearing about the restoration. Awesome to see it finished, and your addition is fitting!

Very nice. Thank for answering back. So would you recommend it?

I definitely would! I also recommend paying attention to your antenna placement - metal can scatter signals, but it's not insurmountable.

The awesome thing about using Al-tape for covering, is that it also provides an excellent surface for texturing and weathering. You can see I used a rotary tool to 'dent' rivet lines on, and a scotchbrite pad to scuff the surface for a brushed-metal look. If you scuff the surface after panel line and rivet 'denting', the lines and bumps take up some of the dust, adding to the depth. Plus, it's fun.
