24p or 30p For Filming RC Planes?

EDIT: Link only test video I did 30P 1/100: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwM6LmBGcCQ

Hi everyone,

I'm soon to be starting filming videos for my channel and want your opinion on frame rates for filming RC planes :)

For the first private test videos I've done it's been at 24p with a shutter speed of 1/50 (not 1/48 as it causes problems with 50 Hz lighting in the UK). This is supposed to create a very film like image and so far from the tests I love the image for face to face shots but for filming planes it seems too stuttery:

I've done some more test shots at 30p that I haven't uploaded and it definitely loses the cinematic feel, but for filming planes (especially with a higher shutter speed and at f16 so it's easy to focus) it looks more pleasant (to me at least :))

I'm just wondering what you guys are using? Because I'm gonna be mixing in flight and ground footage it's really one or the other  I'll be using Canon C100 for ground and GoPro Hero 3 Black or Mobius for the air :)

Thanks for the help!

Kind regards,
Francis :)

Just an addendum if we're talking about shutter angle 30p at 1/100 is equal to a 108° shutter angle as 30*360/100. This is important to note as if you want to create consistent motion blur in a program like After Effects you'll need to set the shutter angle to 108° instead of the default 180° I think :)

So far I'm really liking the footage from 30p 1/100 :)

Kind regards,
Francis :)

Here is a quick test video I threw together (sorry no tripod :() :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwM6LmBGcCQ

In my eyes here are the pros and cons:

PROS:
• Very smooth footage
• Lack of motion blur makes it very clear, perfect for filming RC planes

Cons:
• Has a rather artificial look to it
• Higher ISOs required due to higher shutter speed

It's not the best test as there's not much motion. I'd love to hear your feedback! :)

Kind regards,
Francis :)

Just did a few more tests and I'm not so sure on 30 1/100. I don't know I'm gonna try and get some indoor flying tests this week to see what it's like :) I may risk 30 1/60 and just hope it doesn't play up with the 50 Hz lighting :)

Kind regards,
Francis :)

Francis I have no idea of shutter speeds ect as I have absolutely no experience with photography but I am keen to read about your experience and outcome.

Many thanks Paul! :) I'm gonna get some more test shots at this weeks indoor flying event :) It's gonna be interesting to see if there's flicker at 1/60 shutter due to UK lighting being 50 Hz!

Kind regards,
Francis :)

Look up the podcast that discusses what flitefest uses

Didn't think of that, haha! :D I just watched their setup video and Chad said he uses 24p with 1/60 shutter indoors (I assume because of 60 Hz US lighting) and 1/100 or 1/120 for outdoors :) So I'm glad I'm not gonna be the only one using a higher shutter speed for following planes, haha! :D

Kind regards,
Francis :)
