Building my own radio controller using Atmega microcontrollers

I have just started rc plane building hobby as an extension to my engineering studies. I am currently building a trainer to get a 'feel' of flying which is not that special. The only special thing in this project is the radio control. I have decided to build one myself.
For this, I m going to use two atmega microcontrollers shown below:
this is one is the transmitter View attachment 45406
This is one is the reciever View attachment 45407
Also, I am going to use RF 433 for radio communication. I am going to build my own potentiometers for throttles. I going C as my programming language
I wanted to know if anyone has actually done that. if yes, what was your exeperince?
