First self build quad

Hi all,

I'm into flying quads for a while now and I think I'm ready for a new challenge. So I pickedout some components and was wondering if they will be able to function together and if the quad will stay intact and now catch fire or anything. The parts that I wanted to order:

Controll board: AfroFlight Naze32 Acro AbuseMark FunFly Controller

Frame: SLICK 220mm Quad-Copter Composite Kit

ESC: TURNIGY Plush 12amp (2A BEC) BESC
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__2161__TURNIGY_Plush_12amp_2A_BEC_BESC.html

Motors: DYS BE1806-13 Brushless Motor for Multirotor (2300KV) 24g
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__61433__DYS_BE1806_13_Brushless_Motor_for_Multirotor_2300KV_24g.html

Battery: ZIPPY Compact 1500mAh 3S 35C Lipo Pack
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__25510__ZIPPY_Compact_1500mAh_3S_35C_Lipo_Pack.html

Propellers: Gemfan 5030 Multirotor Propellers One Pair CW CCW (Black)
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__58251__Gemfan_5030_Multirotor_Propellers_One_Pair_CW_CCW_Black_.html

If there are parts that can't be used or if there is a better part (with almost the same price) I would be glad to know. Since I live in the Netherlands I chose to order from HobbyKing so the replacement parts must be from Hobbyking.

I'd suggest looking for different motors, like the emax 1806's instead.

Those DYS 1806 motors have frustrated me to no end. I have 6 of them now, 1 was locked up with grit right from the box, it worked once I took it apart and cleaned it...but kind of set the tone for my experience with them. They aren't as smooth as the emax or sunnysky motors and mine make an odd noise - it's kind of hard to hear but here was my best attempt at capturing it:

I can't figure out what causes it. I replaced the bearings with new avid bearings and the noise stayed. There's no binding and no signs of rubbing anywhere...but they just randomly make this nasty squealing sound.

I've also had issues with the prop adapters - some of them have been a bit off center and taken a good bit of fiddling to get them to run smooth and straight. Though it is nice that you can use the flat CF props with the adapter plate they include - that isn't an option with the emax since the emax have a built in prop shaft as part of the bell.

The emax motors aren't much more expensive but they're lower profile (so they're more protected in a crash) and lighter as well as much smoother. The only downside to the emax is they're harder to take apart and clean if you get sand or grit in them since they're a bit smaller. The emax also come with more mounting hardware for various setups and even include a hex wrench that matches the screws they ship with - nice touch. See my emax 250 build thread for more comparisons including photos.

On a test stand the DYS appear to outperform the emax...but having used both I find the emax more reliable and any performance difference isn't really noticeable in the air and is compensated for by how much smoother they are. At least in my experience.

My experience with the DYS motors is similar to jhitesma's. The eMAX motors outperform the DYS motors over time.

I think your components will fly just fine. You may want to consider a few sets of rotors in a bright color so you can tell which way is front.

1804s are pretty small.

They fly my Polakium quad (AUW 280grams) but 1806s are MUCH more fun.

"I have one last question do you need to order 2 CW and 2 CCW to let your quad fly?" Are you asking about props or motors here?

Motors can spin in either direction. You simply swap any two leads to reverse the direction of the motor. Props you have to buy per direction and yes you need two CW and two CCW to run a quad.

hello fellow dutchman :D make sure you order everything from the EUROPE warehouse from hobbyking or you will not only pay high shipping but also 44% import! was a nice shocker for me to need to pay 30 extra euros to receive my package

44% import ? that's ridiculouse, we have 35% MVA plus customs handling if you're over the 200NOK limit where you have to pay MVA(well from next year it'll be 350, but it's 350 with shipping included, so for HK they mostly reduced how much I can order)

but as long as you don't order with FedEx, you can reduce the value of the package down to 10 if you want at checkout. And in fact sometimes shipping is cheaper from the international warehouse than europe. Try ordering a battery for example. From europe you have to pay slightly more, AND you have to pay almost like 60 euro in shipping with trackable NL Post(only option) from the international warehouse, the battery is slightly cheaper and you pay like 20 Euro for FedEx, which arrives faster than the NL post package...

if you order a single battery the it's best to order from HK international, if you order 3, then it starts to make more sense with europe since you balance out the shipping cost and you can reduce the reported costs with that shipping to get below the customs and import/MVA charges, or at least significantly reduce what you pay.
