Solved Inkscape crashing and not saving

Just spent 6 hour designing a plane and my computer crashed and did not save.
Is there any way to set inkscape to save automatically every ten minuits or so

Yes.
For v1.0:
Edit > Preferences > (click the dropdown arrow for) Input/Output > Autosave .
Then, tick the Enable autosave box, adjust settings as you see fit, and it does require a restart.
