Overhauling a 35cc DLE engine?

Hello everyone, I’ve got a very old third hand plane and the engine is a 35/36cc dle that I have no idea if has been overhauled. Do I need to take it apart and inspect/clean?

If so how would I go about doing something like that.

Going flying tomorrow so advice greatly appreciated

If it has good compression and runs good why would you need to rebuild it? It takes thousands of hours before it would need a rebuild unless ran with out enough oil.

Ah, well I’ve been told that there can be a wear out of rubber things inside, and that it can contibute to an engine failure…. However if most people don’t do it then that would be fine

I would like to know what these rubber things are? The only thing that may need attention if not run for a long time would be the carburetor, being dried out.

Having 50cc gas engines, every year it is advisable to replace the carburetor gaskets, diaphragm etc. to insure your engine does not die in the air. Dealers sell carb kits that you can purchase to rebuild them and 2 other points to make sure you use gas fuel lines(so it doesn't erode) and you don't forget to replace the lines in your fuel tank. After flying for the day, I empty the fuel system to prevent gas damage and fire the engine until it is dies.

In the meantime, read up on what size, pitch prop to use to get proper rpms and learn how to "tune" the engine to avoid overheating the engine and ruining it. Best if you can get someone to help you that knows what they are doing.

Enjoy your gas engine.

I have roughly 11 gasser`s from 10cc to 65cc siting around and only once have I had to replace carb gaskets using good oil really helps I run Amsoil Interceptor ain`t nothing cheap about it but works for me. Every two stroke on the farm gets it including my Optimax outboard. My Stihl string trimmer is 27 years old and have never replaced any gaskets in it and I run 10% in everything.

It is definitely old so I would like to rebuild the carbeurator. What sort of rebuild kit should I be getting? I’ve heard things about the Walnro rebuild kit

Not familiar with the DLE. Your's being old, you need to find the brand carb it has and do a search on the make and model for the correct carb kit. It may/may not be a Walbro and usually not interchangeable.

When your 50cc engine and carbon fiber plane is worth about $2000, and you fly it a lot especially at low altitudes include hovering, you need to insure your carb is tops. So, I just change it.
