RR5 Alien: An End Of An Era

Hey everyone, its been a while!

I've been flying and crashing a LOT recently, as shown by these pictures:

IMG_2252.jpg
Chipped Arm

IMG_2253.jpg
Broken Top Plate

IMG_2254.jpg
Broken Camera Mount

IMG_2255.jpg
Smashed Arm (contributed to the whole arm bending)

IMG_2256.jpg
Hairline Crack in Bottom Plate (keeps getting bigger!)

So here's my question: Fix it, or buy a new frame?

To fix this one I'll need a new set of arms, a camera mount, top plate, and soon, a bottom plate. This equates to $80 bucks on the Rotor Riot store, so I don't quite see it as the economical choice.

Now, I could just get a new frame. Here's a few I was thinking of:

XHover Win5
https://xhover.com/collections/win5/products/xhover-win-5-fpv-racing-frame

or (a drastically different)

Armattan Chameleon
http://www.armattanquads.com/chameleon/

The reason why I'm thinking of two different styles of frames is because while I love the way the Alien flies, it's super heavy and doesn't stick in the corners enough to race. I want to build a quad that will do freestyle AND race, but I can't decide which.

The Chameleon is a proven great freestyle quad with a full warranty, and the Win5 is an affordable super-light race frame. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Happy flying!

Looks like you've gotten your moneys worth out of that Alien huh... :) When you go shredding, you do... jk

If you want lifetime warranty, ya, Chameleon might be what you want, don't know if you've seen Soma's review:

Something along the lines of your XHover Win5 link, and where I think it has it's roots:

...worth seeing/hearing why he designed it the way he did... mine is supposed to be here next Tuesday, woot!

Indeed! Kabab makes a good super light frame. I only chose the Win5 cause it’s arms come chamfered. I think I’ll get a Chamleon now, though. Soma made quite the stunning video on it, and There aren’t any local races until after Christmas.

Dude what have you been doing? Full battery punch outs then free fall onto pavement? My Alien turns a year old tomorrow and all I have done is get it dirty and maybe put a few scratches on it. I have replaced two motors and when the other two wear out I will swap over and try the new Hype Trains on it.This thing is a tank. You had to be doing some seriously sketchy things to do that much damage.

Granted it is a heavy quad but its far from not raceable on every day circuits. Unless you are at pro level you can still win races with the Alien as it handles great when set up right. It doesn't have the top end with the stock Lumenier 2350's but that weight carries it thru turns nicely and its agile as anything.

You got any video we can see of how you had it set up and flying?

Being me! A complete moron who never says no to a gap:p. It’s made me a better pilot though, and it’s been a while since I’ve had a hard hit. There’s a nice big oak tree over my driveway and I’ve been diving and powerlooping it for a while. Sometimes I’m too slow on the throttle and the quad goes nose into asphalt. Super durable little thing though for what I throw at it.

You are the smart one flying on that grass field! Unfortunately, it’s quite the walk/drive to a flyable grass field, so I just fly in the yard.

I unfortunately don't have any on board footage of the quad.

hehe we are the opposite. I WANT trees to dance with and can't find anything suitable within walking distance so I am forced to do open field flying. I can't afford to be replacing broken things so I tend to avoid pavement at all costs. Keeping stocked on batteries antennas and props pretty much keeps my wallet empty.
