Scale Build-Off - Fokker DR1

I've always loved the look of the DR1 and since I started building i've wanted to build one. I saw the scale build off threads starting and i've been itching to throw my hat in. I came across a depron DR1 on rcgroups and it looked like the kind of plane I wanted. Here is the link.

Here is the replica I will be referencing for colours and details:

I'll be modifying the plans by scaling to 80% so that I can use DTFB instead of depron but other than that I will try and closely follow the plans.

Size

Wingspan: 29", 742mm
Length: 24", 612mm

Materials

DTFB
Colour packing tape
Acrylic paint

I always loved this plane. I thought it would a challenge to make it out of DTFB. And even harder to bring it in as a FT Swappable. I'll be following this one.

Nice choice! Yeah, the transition from the square fuselage to the round cowl will be interesting to tackle. Definitely doable, though.

Just a point but nearly all DR1 full size replica actually have 'extended' noses to obtain the correct CofG, unless of course they are using an real (and heavy) Oberursel rotary. ;)
The same also applies to models. It is quite a challenge to get everything far forward enough to achieve a flyable CofG. The scale nose is so short it requires a vast amount of ballast to move it forward. It pays to be build the tail end very light. It is not unknown to put the batteries inside the cowling.

The plans have a lengthened nose. It is a concern however so i'm going to use a heavy motor and as you say if required I'll mount the battery under the cowling.

I built the on that flitetest did but I did the 27" version. It's a profile plane but i'm sure you could make a full fuselage for it. Made mine out of DTFB and it flies pretty good. Weight with using DTFB comes out at twice the weight they say it should. I added a KF airfoil to the top and middle wing and it flies good but needs speed. I'm running a 140 watt motor and a 1000 mah 3s.

I saw that build on FT's youtube channel, I just thought I could get a more scale look with the full fuselage. The plans I chose have a full fuselage and flat wings. See the link in my first post for the plans on rcgroups.
