Short Circuit - ESC or Battery?

I have bought the Bixler 2 about half a year ago now on hobbyking.com and it flew pretty well with a 20A ESC and a 2200 mAh battery (which i bought two of) both from hobbyking. But now some days ago, while i was flying, my plane became entirely uncontrollable and crashed headfirst. Afterwards when i was back home i glued my plane with hot glue and went for another flight, but when i plugged in one of the batteries a lot of smoke came off the plug from between the ESC and battery. I immediately unplugged the battery and felt the ESC which hadnt gone hot yet, while the plug from the ESC was almost boiling. A minute later i plugged in the other battery and this one did fine. I flew a while with this battery and later on i tried to plug in the first battery again and this time no smoke came off, but i didnt dare flying again with this battery anymore.
So now my question is: What has been the problem in this set-up, and is it still smart to fly again with the same batteries and ESC or should I buy new electronics?

The fact that you flew with the second battery means there is nothing wrong with the ESC.
The culprit is almost certainly the connector itself or rather the wires soldered to it.
I suspect on the flight when you lost control it simply stopped making contact and the plane lost all power.
When you tried again I suspect something temporarily bridged across the connector terminals.

What type of connector is it? Were they factory fitted or have you soldered the wires to them?
You need to find out what is wrong as it will happen again.

The connector of the battery is the same as u can see on the link (factory fitted) but I did solder the connector to the ESC. So I'll replace the ESC connectors with better ones, as i had to modify them a little to get them plugged into the battery.

Thanks a lot for your help!

The battery connector is an ST60. (Hobby King fit these on all their batteries over 1000mAh)

If you look on Ebay you can buy just the male part of the connector to fit on the ESC wires. With shrink wrap over the solder joints it should then be as good as the factory fitted battery end.
