*Unofficial* FT Edge

I have now started my journey. Don't anticipate a flight next week from me or anything, I tend to move slow with these things. Have a new baby and family stuff that takes up most of my time. But I'll post updates when I can.

Hey all, great comments and info in this thread. Has anyone put a really beefy motor on this build? Specs say minimum is 1000KV and I had a spare Turnigy 3542/6 1450KV motor I tossed on there. I plan on a maiden flight this weekend. I will update with the results. I like the go big or go home philosophy, just wondering if anyone shared those sentiments.

I'm building a second Edge for my brother, im nice like that ;-).

I thought I would post some more detailed photos of the motor mount reinforcements. It's the only weak spot on the plane. If you want longevity and/or running a beef motor this is imperative. Thanks Andreas for such an awesome plane!

Nice work. I wish I had done this same thing before mounting the cowl. I was able to glue in some extra wide popsicle sticks and strengthen it.
I went with a D3542 / 1450KV motor on 4S and I am going to fly it today. Upgrading the motor definitely moved the cg forward. did you have this issue ? I actually had to add some tail weight. Harbor freight had some small stick on tire weights that worked great for this.

Good luck on your maiden!

That's the same size motor in the build above, I had the feeling it may be nose heavy. Mine uses a 3536 1500kv and is perfectly balanced but with 20g digital servos hanging out back.

You could add additional ply wood stiffeners to the elevator, you might as well put the added weight to good use.

Here's my first Edge...

2nd Edge nearly complete. This build is very satisfying, second time round everything clicked together perfectly.

Thanks for the nose reinforcement info Overprop.
Only my second FT build this one:eek: .First being the goblin. My stabalizers are bending just from transport.
So with this build I have opted for a little stiffening of the flying surfaces.I'm new too FT builds so forgive me if this has been done before.
BBQ skewers glued into a V cut on the control surface edge .I then extendended the elevator plan and winglets with fold overs.
After all the folding and gluing the non tabbed over rudder looks neater with bare wood. imagerud.jpeg
Than the overlapped Stabs.

Hello crowd, I'm 1/2 way through my edge build, and the esc won't calibrate (just continuously beeps). Radio is bound (checked that servos work), and the beeping doesn't stop after I plug the battery in (tx throttle at full). Any ideas? Thanks for all the firewall strengthening ideas.

3/16" balsa wood is exactly the same thickness as FT foam board. When I did mine, I wanted to stiffen some edges so I cut off 5mm and glued on the balsa strips. it's much neater and stiffer, and you can sand the edges round if you want:

Nearly finished.
Thanks for the plans the flitetest crew, really enjoying this build.

Seeing as my fixed wing flying experience is a few hours on a wing and my FT Goblin 10 minutes(it went ok).
I will be putting an FrSky S6R in the bird and utilising the gyro for my first few hours(If it last's that long) .

I have a horrible confession. After looking at other projects I got lined up, I may have to make the Edge a lower priority. It hurts me to say that but I don't think there's anything I can do, just b/c I know it's gonna be a long and slow scratch build anyways. It may just be one of these that I tackle little bits as I can. On the bright side, it will give me some time to work on my flying skills so I don't turn the Edge into a twisted pile of foamboard on its maiden.
