What about foamboard built in a traditional truss style? I imagine it would be very weak, but all assembled, maybe not as bad as I think?

Yeah I have done that before with pretty good success, once you skin it it really strengthens. This one was probably one of my stronger builds

I built one version of the FT Scout with both foam board and balsa. The model just looks like something out of the golden age with the open truss type fuselage. Seems like a natural thing to do.
