A-10 twins

So didn't have the wooden doublers for in the nacelles. So I made one out of foam board with an old circular control horn for the centre. Works brilliant and takes a lot of the slop out of the wheel. Could fit up to an 80mm wheel in there with this setup.
The firewalls I am making out of gift cards and plywood. Slot and tabbing together a box with plywood front and maybe a plywood stuffer back as well. Be quicker than building out of plywood. Hope to have this finished for next week as the electrics are going to start arriving.
Tonight the wing gets assembled. Can't out it off any longer. Need to get measurements and plan out some Ben Harber style spoiler flaps too.

Dummy engine nacelles done. Had a casualty whilst sanding the edges of the wooden supports. Slipped out of my hand, hit the floor and broke in two. Ah well, good thing I made 3 sets the first time😁. Like I knew something would fo wrong with at least one. The nacelles were put together with gorilla glue and hot glue tacks. Worked really well. On a side note. Has anybody noticed that there maybe a little thrust angle in the nacelles? Could be just my eyes😜.
The wings were assembled too. With these I used generous amounts of hot glue on the inner box spar and gorilla glue for the outer skin. After that had thoroughly dried I cleaned gorilla glue off the surface of the joint, light sanding and give it a fiifteen minute epoxy skin over it. Things really string now. Came up with a great idea to make fowler flaps too, so that will be on the list of mods too. Keep tuned for that one. The edges of the wing will be getting the hot iron sealing treatment too.
Now I have to get my firewalls fabbed up hopefully before my motors and esc's arrive. I want to get them sealed up ready to just glue straight to the wing when the time comes. Only thing may hold me back on that is the 55mm wheels. I could fit bigger and with it being a belly lander, I'm more inclined to put the biggest I can fit in.
That's about it for now. Until next weekend when I can properly get at it again.

The Hangar

Fly harder!
Mentor
Which one? Prop, EDF or BDF? Would love to see a few more builds for this model, though it is an advanced scratch build and in no way fast. That will put most off. Worth it though.
I would probably do the prop version to keep costs down. I am one who (once the tiling and cutting the parts out of foam) really really enjoys complex builds. I’m just not sure if I can find space for one of these, and I also have a list of at least 6 planes waiting to be finished up...

Do you think two of the BDF’s you used in the Grunjet would fly the A-10?
Not positive, but I am thinking so, as Mr Overstreet is flying some pretty big planes with 2 of them. Also, now that I am thinking about it, I think Ben Harber has already done it. I will have to try to find the video and share it.

So managed to get both nacelles motors on and sealed up, though only one is complete and ready for the next stage.
My soldering iron packed in on me right on the last connection of the 1st ESC. So in the market for a new one. Think I might goes cordless this time. Anybody any suggestions on a decent one? On a good note though, the opto ESC's I picked fit perfectly into the cavity for the wires to he taped down.
Another lucky one I have had is with the wheels too. Music wire axel I cut was a perfect fit for the control horn centre.
Now I'll start getting the wings edges ironed, ailerons cut/ironed, wires run and begin taking measurements for my flaps.

So its nearing completion. Got a lot of small ends tidied up. Tail glued together and to fuse, wings wired up and nacelles glued on.
Waiting on battery straps and my Rx coming from China. Think I might be waiting a while on those being delivered yet.
Ordered Dubro HD control horns for the flaps too. After seeing them on Ben Harbers A-10, I just had to do it. Though I will be doing a slightly different design. Basically control horn will be going through a slot cut in the top of the wing. The flap itself will just be an additional FB plate with an A-fold re-inforcement anchored to step behind trailing edge, with an ironed double bevel hinge. This way I can keep the servo, control rod and horn on top of the wing, safe from belly landing mishaps.
Need to get the ailerons cut out and hinge ironed. And the the outter pieces of the wings iron sealed.
That's about it for now. Until next time.
