Brumby Trainer Build.

After finding a Brumby Trainer balsa "kit" that my dad bought from Airborne magazine 18 years ago, that he never found the time to build, I have decided to tackle the task of building it, with no balsa experience whatsoever
I am a very technical person with much wood and metal working experience, so I don't class myself as a complete noob as such.

Here starts my journey:

Plans laid out and covered with clear vinyl sheeting. This plan seems to fit perfectly over a standard internal door.

Some of the laser cut parts that came with the "kit". looks like there is a lot of pieces to be built myself, I was hoping that there was going to be a lot more laser cut components...

Got some time to cut out all the laser cut parts, all stacked and sanded to the same size.

A stack of Balsa arrived yesterday, havnt had a chance to start cutting out further parts.

Where to start, Fuselage or Wing?

This is all for now, Until next time.

I like to start with the wings and tail feathers personally. It looks like a good build. I'll be stalking this thread

Agreed, the wings are the most tedious. Once they're out of the way the rest usually just moves right along

Mac82, Gabrielete, i have only just read your advice (after starting the Fuselage tonight) :p

I found a spare hour tonight and starting cutting Fuselage.

These bits, "Nose Blocks" to beef up the nose i assume.

Then traced out my template and started piecing together the sides out of 4 seperate pieces of balsa.
Can someone please give advice on best way to glue these 4 pieces together. i have been told glue them together over Wax Paper, so that glue doesnt stick to the paper, but do you think i can find Wax paper anywhere local???

To cut long strips, straight edges etc, i made this gadget, based on one my dad used 18+ years ago.
(its sort of like a table saw for balsa i guess) Is this a common tool that people use???

Wax paper it's the same stuff that you can get at the grocery store I like to also make sure I clean away any excess.

Maybe where you live.... lol (unsure where you live...). Wax paper seems to be a thing of the past in Australia. we have Baking Paper, (which use for tracing paper) it is just like Greaseproof Paper.

So, i made a bit of progress over the last cople of days.

So, being my first Balsa Plane, there was bound to be errors somewhere.
Unfortunately my first error came as wonky fuselage/tail. it was out by a noticeable amount, so the underside of the fuselage came off, it was all straightened up and new floor put in.

Floor detached, ready for straightening.

so straight!

So, i also got the motor mocked up, servos mocked up, steering and throttle attached to servos, fuel tank in position. (no pics as yet, soon though.)

Just moving away from the Fuselage for a bit while I work on the wing.

Piecing together the wing wasn't as difficult as I initially thought. I had got each side of the wing to this stage.
Nearly ready to join and sheet with 1.5mm balsa.

Both sides attached. started sheeting the top side Leading and Trailing edges, and the centre of the wing.
Ran out of 1.5mm Balsa, so the bottom side will have to wait for another day.
Wing tips still need shaping, but are getting close.
