Ordinary cardboard and homemade foam board are two alternatives worthy of consideration.

Depron can be used for model airplane building, if you have access to it.
I don't think it can use the same building method as foamboard, (I've never built with it), but people have been using it for ages, you might be able to figure something out. I'm not sure if it's a cheap material like foamboard or cardboard.
