F-15EX Eagle II build journey

So while waiting and hoping that FT would at some point decide to change their thoughts about releasing the Jet plans that John designed, I have decided to start a new big project. I'll be scratch building the F-15EX Eagle II by Julius Perdana aka Paper Replika.

This design is based off of two 70mm EDFs, and a 4S battery. This would be a new one for me cause I haven't built much models that are not FT designed espically not this complicated.

Any how the plans have been printed out and today I'll start connecting the titled A4 papers into on full sized plan.
Wish me luck cause I am probably gonna need it.

Today we connected the titled A4 pages to create the full plans. We started off by removing all the margins from the pages so that we can easily tape them together.

Unlike the FT plans where they title down the entire sheet of foam board, here the designer titled down pieces so there was much less pages to remove the margins from. Removing the margins and connecting the pages went along really nicely because it was very clear what connects to what.

The next part of the build process is to cut out the all pieces about 0.5 a cm from their exterior cut line so that I can tape it to foam board. I won’t be making long term plans for this model just yet because I want to make sure I like the model first before I go on spending a significant amount of time making them. As it requires that spray glue the plans to poster board, then scored them and cut them out. Just to be left with having to attach them to the foam board trace them over and then cut them into buildable pieces.

Generally I like making long term plans because it makes building the model again so much faster and if you like a model you’re likely to build it again. I just might change my mind and make long term plans I’ll have to sleep on it.

What’s your take on it?
Let me know.

Perhaps the greatest air superiority fighter ever built and undefeated in air-to-air combat. Definitely one I will follow. Good luck on your endeavor, Mayan. I presume you will use IDF livery.

Today I got all the pieces cut out so that they can be taped to foam board.

So from what I’ve seen so far I will still be able to make long term plans for this model even if I go ahead and tape them straight to the foam board to start with. The reason being is that the don’t have and score cuts like the flite test models do so the pieces won’t get cut into bits.

I did realize that some parts need to be copied twice as well as be mirrored over to create the other side. Another thing that I realized is that some of the foam board pieces need to out of 3mm foam board so I need to get stocked on that too.

Last thing to mention about the plans is that a large part of the pieces need to be cut out of plywood something that here in Israel is both expensive and for me hard to cut out without having access to a laser or CNC machine.
So… I’ll be modeling these pieces on Fusion 360 and print them out using my amazing 3D printer.

More updates tomorrow if I find energy to sit on it cause tonight I planned to go to bed early and ended staying up late.

OMG guy's you just made me remember the time i was transferring some plans onto the foamboard using an overhead projector. taped the foamboard to the wall and cast the image to the wall. it was like doing yoga.
OMG! U just brought back memories of some very old school days. I actually desinged a scale model using a 3 view on an overhead onto drafting paper tape to wall.

Update time....
Yesterday I went through all the parts and highlight the notes to look out for when passing them to foamboard. I highlight with yellow the number of times I need to create the piece, in pink the thickness of the peice when ever it was different from 5mm, and in green each time the material of the piece was not foamboard. Here is an example. Hope this helps me avoid mistakes because the last thing I want with this project is mistakes.

Today I took all the pieces that are supposed to be made of plywood and 3D modeled them so that I can print them on my 3D printer simple because that is way easier and faster for me then trying to somehow create them from plywood. Here is how they look on the Fusion 360 app. I also made a zip of these files and uploaded them as a resource so that others can use them too, waiting for it to be approved by the admins of the forum :), once approved I'll link to it from here too.

Thank you for doing that. I always struggle to cut out plywood in this hobby. Even my plywood motor mounts look crappy- it'll be much easier to 3D print those wooden parts instead.

Your paper cut outs look better than my finished planes! Lots of hard work there. Thanks for sharing with us.

Continuing with this build don’t worry.
The last thing I did with this project is tape all the paper pieces to foamboard. The are a dozens ways to do it I went with good old tape. I tried as much as possible to get the pieces that need duplicating and mirroring on similar sheets of foam board but that didn’t end up like planned, cause I also tried to save up on foam board. And also didn’t make any sense since I would later separate the parts so that’s easier to cut them out since you can route them instead of working around a whole sheet of foam board.
