A Journey into 3D printing... The possibillities are endless!

Hey everybody this thread will be all about my journey into 3D printing. It will go on to showcase the endless possibilities that we have today with 3D printers.
This first post will be sort of an index to the many projects that I will be posting about in this thread and will be updated each time I post a new project.
The idea behind that is to avoid posting a bunch of different smaller threads at least for the smaller projects. Bigger, longer and more complex projects will still get their own thread and will also be linked to from here. I'll also try to link to the files of each project as best I can but if at any point there are files I didn't link to don't hesistate to let me know and I'll do it.

Hope you enjoy this thread and my journey. So here goes...

Projects:

My Designs:
  • SU27 Firewall
  • FPV Camera Mount
  • Spring Lock Hatch
  • Nitro Motor Caps
  • Taranis X10 Express trim button
  • Round firewall stick mount
  • F-15 EX Eagle II plywood pieces
  • ...

It all start a few months back...
For a while my son has been asking for a 3D printer, even saved up a decent amount of money to get himself one. It was at that point when I started doing some research, trying to look for a decent printer at a good price. Yeah I saw the cheap Ender printers and also the more expensive ones like Bambu Lab has to offer. The thing that was also very important to me, was that it would be easy to use and as straight forward as printing on a normal printer. Simple because my hopes were that my son would be able to use it alone without having to come to me each time something didn't work well and needed comfiguring, something that I heard would happen quite often with the Ender printers.

After talking with some friends I realized that the best printer for us would be a Pursa model and decided to go for the MK4 one which happened to be at a good price point and was also said to be a working horse (it definatly is :)). The printer arrived quite quickly and we imdetatly started printing stuff with it.

Like most people that just get a 3D printer, we first mostly printed junk. Like benchy boats, key chains, and all sorts of other objects that had no real use but to be cute, and gather dust as they quickly got thrown somewhere in the house.

But that's not really a good reason why one should buy a 3D printer, the true reason why one should buy a 3D printer is because you can litteraly create anything that you can imagine, regardless to the fact that you can find some pretty usefull things to print too that others have created, and that's where we are at now with our 3D printing journey. We moved from printing junk to printing usefull things that others have modeled or we modeled ourselfs to solve problems with or just have a good purpose.

Self-watering flowerpots/planters for balcony railings
This will be the first project I'll be sharing... It's not RC related but still something very usefull that we got printed for my wife. It's a flowerpot that hooks onto the balcony rail. It's super cool as it can be modified to fit your needs both in size of the flowerpot as well as the shape and size of your railings. To modify it, it's required to have some code understanding so that you can really make changes to it but a little bit of playing with it will get you the desired result.

Here is a link to the original files designed by Eurad.
I printed in normal PLA with default print settings although it would be smarter to print it in a stronger more sun resistant material if your balcony is mostly sunny.

Here is the end result on our balcony.

The next projct that I want to talk about is actually the first design that I ever made, using a free very easy to use online service called thinkercad. It's based off of basic shapes that you can join or extract from one another to create some very usefull models without having to learn more advanced programs like Fusion 360.

The model is a copy of the firewall used in the SU27 that I got the plans of from a friend, or should I say I copied them. This model is a blast to fly espically in formation with friends. Here is a picture of the SU27.

The model isn't all that complicated which is why I could pull it off in thinkercad. It's basically designed out of squares and rectangles that together create this.

I have uploaded the stl file to the resources section so when ever it gets approved by the admins you'll be able to access it using this link.

It is absolutely amazing what a little creativity and a 3D printer can accomplish! But once your friends find out you have one - Watch Out!

Having a ball printing extension wire connectors found on this forum by JB who did the Quickie and Retro Rocket thrust vectoring mechanism. With a few reels of PLA but not enough for a new project but too much to throw away I've printed a bunch for all the club members who wanted some.

Did a little detour from the flow I intended to let you all know that I am now modeling by far the hardest thing that I have to date which is a wheel set to go along with this model.

I am not inventing but carefully modeling from pictures and the actual piece that my friend once bought. It’s connected to the plane though and can’t easily be removed.
