First multirotor build - V tail Quad

Hello everyone, I'm new here and this is my first post.

Guess a little introduction first. My name is Justin and I have been in the RC hobby for as long as I can remember. I had lots of cars and trucks back in middle/high school then they kind of sat for a few years while in college. I had a nitro trainer that I got off a friend after they crashed it. Fixed it and got it running but never dared take it out. It wasn't until recently that I got back in to it just to find out how much has changed. all the lipo batteries and brushless was all knew to me. I picked up a new radio for a boat project I was working on (25CC weed eater airboat, thats another story, but its pretty awesome) Somewhere along the way I found the flite test videos on youtube and I was hooked.

This lead to that and after a bunch of research and recommendations from the flite test team, I got my first quad, a nano qx. Its a blast and I'm having a tone of fun with it. I started to think about whats next and thought it would be fun to build one.

This may be a slow build as the money for parts becomes available (my wife thinks they are toys and that I have too many hobbies, shes right about the hobby thing) Most of all, just looking for some help and insight.

I was going to build a tricopter but say the episode on the V Tail and I was hooked. It just looked cool and still had more fluid movements than a standard quad. I looked at lots of pictures and came up with my own design (based off from the bat bone) and started to draw it up in cad.

I then collected the materials and cut it out on a laser. the main frame is 1/8" birch plywood and the booms are the 1/2" square dowels from the hardware store. I used 6-32 hardware through out to hold it together. I also drew up some landing gear and laser cut those out of some thin ABS (however, I think these will be replaced with delrin at some point) here are some photos I just took of it after I finished the frame

I'm looking for some help from here as to what motor/esc/control board to use. I was thinking of using the KK2 board as that is what David used in the build video.

I would like to carry my gopro 3 on it at some point, that said, what motors and props should I be looking at? ESC? also, I don't want to drop a ton of money on a radio, will the cheaper 4 channel hobbyking radios work fine or do I need something more?

Looking forward to some input and the help that I hear there forum brings.

Thanks,

Justin

Maybe this should have been posted in the multirotor forum? It was a scratch build so i thought here first. Moderators, if this should be moved, please do so.

Nice build. It looks beastly (my favourite) lol
i would like to see some video of it flying and please keep us updated on your progress.

Justin,

That thing looks sweet!! I am about to start my first scratch built quad (waiting for the parts to arrive from HobbyKing), and this is inspiring me to make it epic! I love the V-tail, but am going to try my parts on a few different frames (especially the Dead cat config). Awesome how you are using a laser-cutter.

For electronics, I have ordered all my parts from Hobby King. I simply used the link from the old Anycopter quad page. HobbyKing also sell all the wires and connectors you need, so there is very little soldering required. Here are the parts I ordered:

KK2 Flight Control Board x1 $24.99 $24.99 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...th_6050MPU_And_Atmel_644PA_UK_Warehouse_.html

Turnigy Park300 Brushless Outrunner 1380kv x5 $14.75 $73.45 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=14398&aff=247441

That looks great!

How much does it weigh?

Would love to see pics of your laser. What software do you use to run it?

I would go with the open pilot CC3D board. It is available from RTFquads.com and the forums at openpilot.org are very helpful. The software is very user friendly.

I have both the original Turnigy transmitter and the Turnigy 9xr and either work well for quads. For the open pilot CC3D board it is nice to have 6 channels with switches and sliders or dials so you can change flight modes. Also there is a tuning mode and you can use the dial to adjust your gains in flight.

Great example video here to setup the TXPID adjustment.

Great Looking Frame!!!

Your design has one common problem. The V-tail motors are slightly tilted towards the front too which will make the copter creep forwards all the time.

Thanks for all the input thus far. The weight of the frame as it sits is 250 grams which seems respectable.

The laser I am using is a Chinese laser. 80 watts which is over kill for this but we use it for plastics at my work. I think it's similar to the laser that the flitetest team uses from what I could see in their videos. It's from rabbit laser in Ohio. Great company to work with. I just use the software it came with which is laser cut 5.3. I draw the files in dxf format in draftsight.

I also cut out pieces to build a H quad so I may put that together.

I'm all about file sharing this kind of thing so if anyone wants the cad, let me know!

Balu, did the one that David built out of the bat bone not have the same issue? I could change the motor mounts on the tail to square it up better. Wouldn't be all that hard. Thanks for the tip!

For tuning and getting airborne the H-quad will be easier for your first flight. Once you have that figured out transferring that knowledge to the Vtail with more complex geometry for figuring out your mixes and percentages will be easier.

Thanks for the tip Ryan.

I see you are in Michigan, I'm in the Holland area.

Will post pics of the H quad once I build it

Yeah, its just a standard right angle gusset with beams construction. very similar to aluminum extrusion I use at work to build machines. kind of like erector sets or legos!
