First scrap build: the Funbat (questions)

alright, I think I'm getting this. you have to have a an esc that can work for your battery and also provide the correct current for your motor. so for example, I can use the esc colorex just gave me a link to, a 2s 500mah battery and a motor that runs off a 2 cell battery.
k, one more question: motor affects performance. if my plane weighs what it is suppose to at around 425g or about 15 oz, what would this motor and prop provide:http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5208
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6225?
how can I judge the characteristics of a plane before I actually make it?

Recommending a power setup from technical stats is very hard. The suggestions I have made are mostly forwarded from other knowledgeable people.

What I can tell you from the stats: It says it has 400 grams of thrust. If you make your build less or equal to 400 grams, it will fly.

All the basic electronic and hardware stuff weighs around 150 - 250 grams. So you have 150 - 250 grams for the build itself.

Dont even think of this motor/prop if your Funbat is more than 200 grams.

Yeah it could work if you used a three cell battery, you would have more weight a bigger prop, but also more thrust. The factor here is the quality reputation of the motor.

I have seen more people use the 24 gram motor than those using the 2213n.

Another factor to consider is that a heavier plane might be harder to fly. Even if it has the thrust, it needs to go faster to be able to fly. And that makes it a bit more complex to fly. It's fine if you go with the 24gram, it's a very much tested setup.

if I stuck this on there would it have a crazy amout of thrust? I mean, what does say, 50g more or less change. Is it a dramatic or gradual change?
btw, I realize this will not work with my battery...
You wont get any speed with an 800KV motor unless you feed it with 5 cells LiPo for a FUNBAT.
Try to get a motor with about 1600KV for 3 cells and keep the weight under 250-300 grams if the motor is about 50 grams heavy.

k guys, one more question. I'm ordinging electronics tonight, and I was thinking about getting a epp wing if the electronics I have on this will work on the wing too. will they? or do I need something extra? also, a wing is a "pusher" so how do I reverse the prop?

You don't reverse the prop - you reverse the motor and flip the prop.

I assume you're getting this:

You might need some JST battery connectors and motor connectors as well as heatshrink. But I don't have any experience in buying those.

For the Buddycode to work, first log into HobbyKing, and then click here:

yup, thats what I'm getting. I figure I'll get some more servos and then just go to my local hobby store for any extra parts. but this setup will work with for example the Bonsai?

I can't say for certain. It might work, but it would better to put it on hold. It doesn't matter too much, since it's backordered.

But if you'd like to try slope soaring, then the Tek Sumo makes a nice sloper, and you only need the same servos, the same battery, and you could even use the same ESC to give power to the Rx instead of a BEC.

But if you'll take my advice, you'll want each plane to have it's own stuff. Pulling stuff in and out (especially in the Rx) may end up breaking it.

speaking of backorders, how long do those usually last on hobbyking?

Some products are replaced and never removed - these will never get back in stock. But popular stuff Turnigy ESC's usually get restocked once a month. I believe Turnigy ESC's are usually restocked around the 10th-15th of each month according to my experience the last three months.

thats awesome! they seem to restock fast enough that I shouldn't have to wait too long. I ordered like 10

I dont know what pusher wing you are relating to.
Dependning on the size you will need different motors.

My choise of motor for a pusher wing is an inrunner with a high KV.
For a wing with a span of aprox 1 meter i would use a motor similar to http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__4705__KB28_47_16S_2400kv_Brushless_Motor_FIN_.ht ml
For a smaller wing perhaps http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__4216__KB20_30_30S_3100kv_Brushless_Motor_FIN_.ht ml
HXT 900 are fine but ESC and batteries need to fit the motor.

A wing should be something "hot" to fly, and a high KV pusher makes a nice "jet" sound.

well, I messed up my first version of the funbat by cutting off the ailerons(oops). So I just finished making another one, this one is the final.

Looks nice! I am assuming you kept the paper on the foam? If so, you can still use your first one if you need it. Just use tape hinges.
