Improving the Build Experience - Seeking Your Feedback

It’s been a while since I’ve flown, but I recently got back into it when my buddy David (@RCExplorer) visited from Sweden this summer. I’d forgotten just how fun it is! One thing I realized, though, is that while Josh Bixler’s build videos are still as fantastic as ever… I found myself wanting some written, step-by-step guides to follow along with. Things like exploded views of the planes, the various radio setups, or special techniques for cutting and bending foam would be really helpful in a written format with pictures for quick reference.

That got me thinking: where are the gaps in the building and learning process for others? I’ve built four planes in the past few weeks, and even for me, it took a bit of time to get back into the groove. I’d love to hear your thoughts so we can improve the build experience for newcomers and veterans alike.

I also want to give a huge shoutout, not just to Josh and the entire Flite Test crew for their incredible work, but also to some amazing contributors right here on the forums. People like @SP0NZ, @johnbecker31, @Mid7night, and @Rasterize have been an invaluable resources to newcomers in the community. Their guidance, plans, and advice have made a huge difference, and we couldn’t do it without them!

What I’m proposing is a standard format for written materials to accompany every build. Since we all learn differently, I believe step-by-step written guides with clear assembly images would be a perfect complement to the fantastic videos that already exist. I’ve started creating some examples for the FT Flyer build to give an idea of what I’m envisioning...

With all that said, I’d love to hear from you – what do you think would make the build process even better? Whether it’s more written materials, easier access to specific steps, or anything else that could improve the experience, I’m all ears. Let’s keep working together to make Flite Test the best resource for RC enthusiasts!

I love the idea. I've always been a big fan of the Lego style build instructions. I think having build instructions would complement the build videos. I would recommend that the build instructions follow the steps in-line with the sequence in the build video to keep them consistent.

I am for anything that will move the hobby forward, and make it more accessible for those just getting started! I love the idea, and will consider it for any future builds for sure!

This concept would be helpful for a person that does not have English as a first / no language. I'd like someone who does NOT have English as a first language to comment on how accurate the YouTube translate is??

I really like the idea of instructions, I have built a large (7ft wingspan) glider off of a member in Australia‘s plans and he had instructions. And I have to say it was (in my opinion) more enjoyable than the build videos, (I have built 3 ft planes, the viggen being my favorite build video). Looking forward to what comes of this!

The type of assembly instructions ala Legos are a great idea.

StoneCap; How did you create the images in the first post??? Inquiring minds want to know.

O suspect that FT could do that as well during the build process by capturing images from the video or by staging the parts during the build process.

Im Norwegian, with not english as first language. Youtube or other web conversions is usually pretty crap! as long it isnt by a good stand alone language conversion program. No webconversions (as youtube) can fix if gets some technically whatever its about. For "easy" conversions of the "daily talk", it gets good, but into specific stuff, its not working. Everyone needs to know eg.some english/american language to understand what the complet sentence is saying, if not, and needs conversion of every word to set together and understand a sentence, they will get problems.

What a great idea, a few captions may also help.
Examples: Above fold or Servo horns go to the front & to the outside.

This would be very helpful with the Aurora as the servo direction totally depends on how you install them.

I agree with the idea of having step-by-step written guides with clear assembly images to complement the build videos. This would make the build process more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

the trouble by making a step-by-step graphic build guide, it that it can use longer time making ther build assembly instruction. if every step should be maked a graphic illustration on. . At least by making it fully graphic. If using only photos its easier though, but that definitly dont function by first one-time scratchbuilds where possible adjustemnts needs be done on-the-go when building.

These images were created a long time ago in Sketch Up.
