Mix and match

Hi guys back to pick your brains again---Got this plane with a ducted fan I wish to add a much smaller ducted fan along with the existing motor (all electric of course) now if I add the smaller motor with its own ESC and battery but connect the sensor lead to the the existing receiver will it work??

Yes, you can use separate batteries for the two motors, connected to the same receiver. Disconnect the red wire on the plug from one of the two ESCs so that they aren’t both providing 5v to the receiver.

However, I’ve heard that having mismatched motors is very inefficient. I think it’s because each prop is like an auger going through the air. If one of them isn’t augering as fast as the other, then the fast one is dragging the slower one through the air, causing drag. Not sure though.

Hi Foamforce thanks for the info. I think your bit about the auger is probably right so just want to clarify the bit about the red wire is this the one from the battery, the one to the motor or the red one on the sensor cable the the receiver? many thanks.

Are you putting the 2 EDF's in series(one behind the other) so that one throttle controls both or what is the setup?

Hi mate well the model in question is a V1 Doodlebug that I have built but it is too heavy for the existing EDF plus it is well set back so I thought (all experimental) to add a small motor to the nose but using a ducted fan/blade with no shroud as this might have given it a bit more thrust at the nose and keeping it up? but maybe a completely separate setup for the smaller motor might sort it out?
