New to RC Planes, Is Starting with Phoenix Simulator & Turnigy 9XR PRO a Good Combo?

Hi all,

I'm interested in getting into the foam RC plane hobby and figured I might as well start with a simulator. I'm planning to use Phoenix 5.5 on Windows 10, a Turnigy 9XR PRO (Mode 2) radio, and a Hobby King USB adapter https://hobbyking.com/en_us/usb-simulator-cable-all-in-one.html to get the radio to talk to the PC. Anyone see any flaws in my logic? I've already downloaded the Flite Test planes package for Phoenix.

Thanks,

Jeff

Using a simulator is a great way to sharpen your skills when the weather will not cooperate.

Go to the AMA web site and search for model clubs in your area.
Many clubs have instructors able to help you. My own club has trainer type aircraft and buddy boxes. Nothing beats a seasoned instructor showing you how to fly and what to look out for. From helping you pick out the right plane to showing you how to go thru a pre-flight checklist, to what to do in the event of a crash. (Yes, you will crash, I do too!)

I'll also add a plug for AMA membership. It includes insurance

simulators=priceless

because of one i was able on my first attempt at real flight, to taxi, take off, fly, and land. no way that happens without the sim.

plus with phoenix 5.5 you can download a large portion of the FT planes and fly them before you even build them. win/win!

good luck,

jason ;)

ps- and another plug for the AMA, go join.

Jeff,

I'm in nearly the same situation as you are. I hadn't done any real RC flying prior to my first flight about 2 weeks ago. What I did do was pick up Phoenix RC 5.5 and a transmitter and practice. Using the sim allowed me to get used to the control inversion that you get when the model is flying toward you. After a couple week's practice on the sim, I was able to fly the FT Simple Cub without any crashes to date. I did still scare myself a couple times though!

I can't comment on the 9xr, as I've been using a Spektrum DX6.

I'll also parrot what Jason said above. You can download a lot of the FT models from the forum here and install them in Phoenix. Nobody's made a FT Cub model yet, but I found the Storch easy enough to fly on Phoenix.
