One of the local clubs my RC friend belongs now requires an AMA membership as well as their $75 fee. To even get a membership there you'd be out $140. Then you have to pass a "competency test" which is basically you schedule a day and time where a senior member watches you take off, do a circuit and land to make sure you can control your aircraft.

The good part is I wouldn't have to worry about sports clogging up the field. The bad part is it costs quite a chunk of change now and it is a much further drive for me.

Thats pritty much every club. The fee covers cost on maintaining and improvements. Most are 50-150$ + ama if you fly once or twice a month its worth it.. THe fun flys are awsome..
This is the club i am planning to join... http://www.gamtnrc.org

This is my old club. they are at a new field now. They organize SEFF. However they are now over 100 miles away from me. :/ I would join back in an instant.. http://www.fayetteflyers.com/

To me clubs are worth it. I guess im old school.. Back when I started 90+% of the people who flew joined clubs, or they joined clubs after the destroyed their first plane for the trainer. I worked at a hobby shop so I saw it all.

This is a video from the FF field im flying the read plane.
