Tiny Whoov

I was too impatient to wait for FT to release the Tiny Whoov speed build kits (announced in the last podcast), so I scratch built one today.

If you don’t know about the Tiny Whoov, it’s a micro hovercraft, built with brushed micro (inductrix, etc) parts. Here’s the original article - https://www.flitetest.com/articles/tiny-whoov

I slightly modified the original plans. Instead of glueing the motors to the foam mounts, I sacrificed an old whoop frame ducts to hold the motors. This meant that I needed to add a additional foam layer for the “raft” to get the needed height. I also mounted the FC (I used an old Dromida Ominus) under the main deck.

Because I was using the ducts, I needed to start with smaller holes. I roughed them out and sanded them to fit and be smooth. (Left rough, right finished)

Duct fit

Next I glued on the two rough layers of “raft”. I bevel cut the bottom one as an attempt to reduce the drag.

I sanded the outside edges to match and be smooth. I sanded the inside to be smooth too. I found that removing the bottom paper let me get a good, smooth, consistent edge for the bottom. Once I was happy, I wiped a thin layer of hot glue to improve durability. Just like for aircraft hinges, a little bit goes a long way. Remember, you want this hovercraft as light as possible.

Electronics installed!

Dry weight is about 23 grams

Here’s the maiden!!!

Thanks! It’s fun. I also FPV’d it!

Upon further reflection, I should have mounted the camera further back. It makes it a tad nose heavy.

Now that is cool as all get out hehe. Perfect for gymnasium or basket ball court racing.

That's genius! I say the next indoor RC car race you hear about gets to face the mighty Tiny Whoov! Drift action that wheeled objects merely dream about... :)

These Tiny Whoovs popped up a couple weeks ago. They are super fun to drive/drift. You don’t need and custom mixing, you just keep the normal motor orientation and prop rotation as stock. Throttle controls hover and forward drive. Yaw controls turns. Pitch and roll do nothing.

Not my video, but others are out there racing them already:

Think I remember that from my nephews playing nintendo back in the day. Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts, or one of the bajillion Final Fantasy games?

I’m stuck in a boring meeting, and all I can thinking about is Whoov’ing between the conference chair legs.... here’s to a mid-week bump

I saw these about two weeks ago and since my daughter broke the frame on her e010 last year (and I've been lazy about printing a new frame for her since I'm sure she'd break a printed frame even faster) I figured it was a good way to revive her electronics.

I used the original Tiny Hoov plans and cut them on my MPCNC with my needle cutter Only took it 6 minutes to cut it from some scrap FT WP foam I had laying around - and I even added some extra .5mm deep "cuts" to mark where things get glued together.

It took longer for my glue gun to warm up than it did to build, and about 30 minutes after I started I was ready to test. Wasn't much of a test though...I didn't have any cells charged up and my daughter was asleep so I didn't want to risk waking her up. But it did scoot across the carpeting in our back room so I was fairly confident it would work well.

Sure enough the next morning she saw it on the kitchen counter and wanted to know what it was :D We went outside and she had an absolute blast with it. She put more packs through it that morning than she did when it was a quad. And pretty quickly she was looking to do stunts.

All by herself she figured out that she could launch it off of things like tables and counters and it would "float"...it's not quite a hover but it's not quite a fall either. This escalated quickly with her looking for taller and taller things to launch off of. After culminating in a launch off the roof of our house (with my help to get it up there) she decided she wanted to launch without my help and decided to build herself a ramp:

She wants to find a small pond to try it on next :D

i've been looking at these builds for a little bit now... cause I just finally picked up my first micro drone... e010 is on it's way along with the taranis radio protocol thing so I can use my qx7...

after seeing the whoov natrually I plan to get a few more of these $12 quads and have some fun... :)

That actually floats off that ramp better then I thought it would. Get a light weight skirt on these and see how well they do in short grass. these could explode if they do well there.

Finally a use for the plastic bags from the store. :) (maybe) I can't wait to break one of my e010/H36s so I can make one of these!

I've actually got it going over really short even grass without a skirt surprisingly well. But uneven grass will stop it quickly, as will small bumps and rocks. I'm thinking about making more of a wedge shape on the front so it can "climb" small obstructions easier. Right now the sharp square edges make it easy to hang up on things.

It actually did better over grass than it did over dirt/sand which surprised me. It also goes right over gravel and cat litter (my truck has a few drips) no problem.

The ramp doesn't really show off how well it floats. I need to get video of her launching it off the truck or roof. It's pretty impressive how well it stays stable and controllable while in the air. It's kind of like a quad at low power with airtime/hangtime - it falls but it's still very much under control.

I've wanted a hovercraft for a long time but never got around to building one. Now I'm itching to build a bigger one with some brushless motors and proper controls. Just not sure if I want to use the spare 1103 motors I have from my 2" quad or if I want to go bigger and use some 2204's or really big and pull out some 2212's....hmm. 8" hover wouldn't be very tiny any more but could be fun....

... I get the feeling my wife is going to want to kill you ;-)... when I was a kid (teens) i had a toy grade RC hovercraft... it was awesome as I lived 1 house down from the water in Panama city (FL) so I could "drive" it down my driveway and right into the water... now you've got me looking at DIY rc hovercraft
