"Like I need another plane like a hole in my head..."

Oh, there is ALWAYS another plane that needs a home! I'd be afraid to show my collection, in case my wife happened to see the picture evidence!

I'd love to join this build along with my still factory wrapped Kadet Sr. kit but I simply don't have room for another assembled plane. Right now I'm putting together an EPP Eagle to scare the birds away from the newly seeded sports fields at work but it'll stay at work and won't take up any room here. I really should be working on the many half finished builds I have stashed all over the place.

Okay it’s settled then, for your fall build you have to finish two partially built planes. Lol

Well.... the EVA twin is almost done. The Telemaster 40 has been waiting for covering for a few years. The mini Telemaster needs the wing built. The Herr Cub needs the Tri-Pacer mod completed. The alpha build canard prototype needs to be finished. The Ivan Pettigrew Partenavia from plans needs a wing redesign. The Dave Blum BD-5 needs a power system. The Herr Bonanza needs to be covered. The Park Scale Models Monocoupe 90 needs finish covering. These are just the ones that come immediately to mind. Where do I start? It's all my own fault. I get a little bit bored with a build then move on to something else. It's a miracle anything ever gets finished! The electrified Eaglet 50 took over 10 years.........

Guillows makes a few kits that are designed for display and not flying. I'd do one of those if display is your intended purpose. Plus, Guillows kits tend to go together well for the first time builder. They call them "Build 'n Show" so look for that on the box.

Here are a few.

PBY Catalina

Military Jets

Wright Flyer

DC-3

In general, laser cut kits will give you a better first time experience than die-cut. None of the links above are laser cut.

I went to a semi-local hobby shop this weekend and picked this up. Dumas Mister Mulligan kit. I liked the look of it uncovered in the picture. This is my first ever balsa build.

Pictured here is the exact moment that I realized I am in over my head.

I will start a build thread so the experts can help me along the way.

The Mr. Mulligan is a golden age beauty! Looks just like my Zeke's Monocoupe 90A. As TMR suggested some Guillows kits are suitable to build for display and or flying. Don't cover it and it'll look like a museum piece hanging from your ceiling. Cover it and mount some gear and you take to the skies!

A friend gave me a Guillows Spirit of St. Louis kit for my birthday. I also bought a Dumas Taylorcraft kit from Joker a while back. I'm thinking both of them when I finally build them will NOT be covered. I'll shoot them with some WBPU to protect the wood and hang them from the ceiling as display only. I've always loved (but couldn't afford) the old uncovered scratch built airplanes I've seen hanging in antique shops.

So, my ability to take part in the upcoming build-along.... :(

It seems as my wonderful, caring, and understanding wife DOES have a limit when it comes to me playing with RC planes. I mentioned to her the build-along, and my plan to build a gyrocopter (spoiler alert, she was not impressed), and little did I know she's actually been paying attention to what I am working on and what is sitting on the shelf collecting dust!

The tipping point appears to have been the last swap meet I hit, and me bringing home a fiberglass fuselage for a 1/5 scale FW-109 (WWII German fighter) and a Sig Tclips. I'm not sure why I bought the Sig, but it seemed like a good idea at the time, and that plane is fairly easy to hide. :) However, that FW-109 bare fuselage is very long for a plane with an 85" wingspan. Heck, it's almost as long as my 1/3 scale Sopwith Pup, so it was hard to sneak it in the house. Even without a wing (it's just the fuselage, plans, and some assorted vacuum formed parts) it stands out and was quickly spotted! Cue the "sad trombone" sound effect.

<her pointing to a Hobbico Extra 300 bare balsa fuselage> "What about THAT plane that has been sitting there for two years?" I wasn't stupid enough to say it, but there are actually TWO of them I got from a swap meet.

<pointing to another one> "And that one your dad gave you is broken, why are you even keeping it?" In my defense, it was my first RC plane and has sentimental value, and is completely repairable.

<and yet another plane meets her steely eye> "What the hell did you do to that one, it looked nice when you got it and now it's..." Ah, but that was originally built as a static display for a hobby store, and I just need to finish stripping it so I can add electronics!

It was hopeless, I've learned to pick my battles and I prefer to pick ones that I can actually win. :) And I hate to say it, but she's at least 51% right, as my collection of "projects" is getting a little out of hand. But at least I don't have a secret storage locker filled with planes. Yet...

So I did what any guy with an un-diagnosed RC obsession would do in a situation like this, I threw my wallet at her and ran screaming out of the basement like a child and hid until it was safe to come out.

With all that said, she's actually been ridiculously understanding about this hobby and everything that goes along with it, so I'll listen to her suggestion that I temporarily stop adding to the fleet until some of the old work is finished up. That means the gyrocopter project is back on-hold, but it also means I finally have a reason - nay, a MISSION - to finish one of the older projects.

Here's what I'm thinking, and others in the Build-Along can veto the idea if they wish:
I've got at 4 or 5 different balsa projects at various stages of completion that have stalled or were never started by me, and I could list them along with pictures and descriptions. There is a bit of variety in the types of planes and what needs to be done, from simply re-building a crashed plane to finishing a partial-plane with scratch-built parts. Whoever is so inclined could vote for which one I should build, and that would be my project. The biggest projects in my hangar would not be included as there just isn't time to do them right during the contest time-frame.

Thoughts?

Take her shoe shopping...... Hold her purse and hang your head in total shame the entire time. All the guys that see you will understand that you did something that only she considers heinous and you're being punished for it. You'll be off the hook in no time!

As long as I work on the bathroom remodel, my wife might not care I'm starting another airplane. Might is the key word...

I could sense I was hitting near the end of wifely patience in past few weeks of RC, but I kept assuring her that I was taking at least 4 planes to the upcoming RC club auction October 21st. I was still getting a little side eye, but then yesterday she knocked over a cooler and broke a big hole in the wing of my new 1/4" Classic! And instead of being being angry I was stacking wings in the closet, she was apologetic for breaking the wing and suggested I take over a much bigger upstairs closet for wing storage!

The covering and one rib repair isn't going to be a big deal at all, and I'm more than happy with the trade off for the bigger wing storage space! :applause:

I don't know that this approach will work for all spouses - in fact it might backfire for some - but consider putting a sacrificial airframe out where it may do more good for the hobby ;)

That sounds risky at best in my household!

Doing a bit more "damage control" with my wife yesterday I think my next project is going to be the two Hobbico Extra 300's from a swap meet a couple years ago. I'll use one to fix the other and then THROW ONE AWAY after I've picked the carcass clean. That will reduce the fleet size and also take care of a dust covered airframe. I'm going to regret this, but maybe I'll go with glow for it.

You get that Bird of Time up yet? :p

I'm pretty sure you have more UNBUILT airplanes than me, Jeff.

The BoT... can't wait to do that one someday as well! I'm guessing I have easily 25 or more projects or kits in various stages of completion right now. Some purchased that way, others I started. Some day I'll rent a table or two at a swap meet and thin the collection. Maybe. :)

I have a Sig Wonder kit that's been collecting dust for the past two years. I would be interested in making that an electric conversion. Anyone here ever built one?

I’ve seen some electric Wonder conversions online. Hope you build it because this is a project that I would also like to take on one day and it would be nice to see a detailed build.
