Summary:

Participants will build a scale electric motor driven, radio-controlled airplane model of a WWII aircraft that was never used in combat (in WWII), and demonstrate that it is capable of controlled flight. At the end of the design portion of the competition, a panel selected from the Flite Test forums will score the entries and select winners from the completed and flight-proven models posted on the forums. Additionally, several in-person group activities will occur at the Flite Fest events to celebrate and demonstrate the accomplishments of the participants for those who can attend. In-person participation at a Flite Fest event is not required to participate in this challenge.

Objectives:

  • Celebrate the obscure, unusual concepts and advances of WWII aviation
  • Foster interest in building foam board model aircraft from community plans
  • Promote designing and building as one of the aspects of the FT community
  • Compete in flying events where any level of experience can be a winner
  • Engage in some friendly forum banter :)

FTFC2018.png

Part 1 - The Design-Off Rules:

1. Subject must resemble an aircraft designed for military use in World War II that never engaged in active WWII combat. Scale outlines may be changed within reason to improve flight characteristics or for ease of construction. Aircraft that were used in military surveillance missions but never shot at, designs that were on paper only but never built, early jets that were in development but not not completed in time for WWII action, and planes that were built but never flew are all fair game. The aim is to celebrate the unusual and advanced concepts of the time period. Please consult the community in this thread if you have doubts about a specific aircraft's inclusion.

2. All designs must use electric power with motors from (or equivalent to) one of the Flite Test Power Packs. Exceptions for really crazy planes can be proposed, but are discouraged in the scoring. This way the largest number of community members can participate with existing or easily accessible equipment. Until Flite Test makes available an EDF power pack, jet or rocket designs may use any available EDF or modify the airframe for pusher prop or prop-in-slot with no scoring penalty.

3. Building designs to 1/10 scale is encouraged, but not required. For example, an aircraft with a 42' wingspan could be built at 1/10 scale with a 50" wing and perhaps a C pack motor, or at 1/20 scale with a 25" wingspan and perhaps a pack A motor.

4. To include as many builders as possible in the challenge, FT building techniques should be used as a foundation. Other more advanced techniques may be used but you should keep in mind that others may want to build YOUR airplane and may require additional skills to do so - be sure to provide clear build instructions for these techniques. Incorporation of FT power pods, FT Elements firewalls is encouraged for this purpose, but are not required.

5. To include as many pilots and teams in the challenge as we can, aircraft are encouraged to have multiple flight crew members to operate bomb drops, camera surveillance, turret functions, etc.

6. Entries must demonstrate that they are capable of controlled flight before the Design-Off closing date to be considered for judging for the Design-Off portion of the community challenge. Only videos of the entry in flight will be considered proof of flight-worthiness.

7. Already started builds may be entered.

8. A complete set of digital plans must be available in the entries build thread by the close of the Design-Off. Vector-based formats are preferred but not required.

9. Build instructions MUST be provided through video instruction, textual write-up, or build log. Techniques different from standard Flite Test skills should be clearly explained. An excellent example can be found here: http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?36200-Baby-Bugatti-700m

10. Participants may submit more than one entry, and multiple entries for the same design from different participants are acceptable.

11. Participants in the design challenge do not need to be able to attend an in-person Flite Test event (although we hope you can!) Scoring and adjudication of the design entries will occur through and be announced via the FT forums.

Coordinator's Instructions:

  • Registration for the Design portion of the challenge will be by posting participant members’ FT user name, the model to be entered, and a link to the entries build thread on this thread, NOT via PM to the OP. All aspects of the design challenge are coordinated virtually through the forum: in person participation or demonstration is not required (and in fact not available).

    Example of entry format:

    AwesomeForumMember
    WWII Plane Name
    http://forum.flitetest.com/showthrea...7-AwesomeBuildThread

Build threads should be titled in the format:

FTFC'18 WWII [plane name] designed by [designer name]

With the shortened version of 'Flite Test Forums Challenge' in the prefix so searches and causal forum browsers are all the more likely to notice these projects.

Entrants are encouraged to add why they chose this model, and link to documentation for historical appropriateness of the design for this challenge. (Wikipedia, Janes' Planes, etc.) Links to historical confirmation should be in the build thread for scoring purposes.
  • Registration for Design entries will open no later than August 1, 2017.
  • The Design portion of the challenge will end on December 31st, 2017. This is to facilitate time for community members to build aircraft well in-advance of the 2018 Flite Fest events.
  • Registration to participate in the group challenges at a particular Flite Fest Event (East, West, South, etc) will open the day the Flite Fest event is announced, and remain open until the event occurs.
  • Design challenge adjudication will be completed and points accumulated will be posted by January 31st 2017.
  • It is recommended that designers not review the rubric during the course of their project. To foster creativity and fun, review the rubric at the start, make your plan, build, and then review when nearing completion to see where you may accumulate additional points. The scoring rubric will be attached to this thread.

Part 2 - Group Demonstration Events:

At each 2018 Flite Fest event where sufficient participants gather, several group activities will be coordinated to demonstrate airworthiness, awesomeness, craftsmanship, and team camaraderie. A community volunteer coordinator will need to be identified for each event to ensure we can pull these group challenges together.

The Briefing: A coordinated static presentation of all participating models at the flight line for community show-and-tell. We've done this in the build tent, and on the flight line - and the flight line was much more accessible to a wider spectator and pilot audience.

The Timed Invasion: A coordinated flight will occur with all participating models to flood the skies with all models, operating at the edge of their speed envelope. To simulate a mission cycle, aircraft will take off as simultaneously as is safe and feasible, and land following a 5 minute flight. Randomly assigned spotters for each aircraft will time the flight from takeoff to landing, and closest time to exactly 5 minutes wins.

The Bombing: A simulated bombing run with all aircraft capable of dropping a payload (or ejecting their pilot). All dropped items must follow AMA restrictions, and be clearly marked for identification purposes. Payloads controlled or dropped by a team members other than the primary pilot gain a 1 meter advantage. Closest (adjusted) payload to the target wins.

Coordinator's Instructions:

  • All models participating in these events should be built using designs meeting the Design-off guidelines.
  • Designs do not need to be completed in time for the Part 1 challenge scoring to participate in the Part 2 events. You can pick up on a design idea started by another forum member and finish it for this!
  • The participant does not need to be the designer - please build other people's awesome designs and bring them to Flite Fest!
  • Registration for the in-person events at Flite Fest (East/South/West/wherever) will be via posting in a specific thread created for those events, when the dates of those events are announced.
  • A listing of these coordination threads and results will be in a dedicated post down here.

FTFC18 Design Challenge Results

So here it is folks - the results of Phase 1!

I know you're going to want to scroll down and look for where your favorite design is ranked, but hold with me for a moment while I explain the process and output here.

Let's revist the objectives of this community challenge.

Objectives:
  • Celebrate the obscure, unusual concepts and advances of WWII aviation - Heck yea we did this!
  • Foster interest in building foam board model aircraft from community plans - over 300 posts in the main thread alone - I think we knocked this out of the park!
  • Promote designing and building as one of the aspects of the FT community - again, 300 posts! And in-person events at each Flite Fest coming up!
  • Compete in flying events where any level of experience can be a winner - Coming soon to a Flite Fest near you!
  • Engage in some friendly forum banter :) - Definitely!

So as a community, I say you've done incredibly well! We had 44 entries start the journey with us, and 19 of those have 'proof of flight' videos and received scoring attention. That's 19 new planes - of various flight qualities to be sure - but 19 new planes released in just 6 months! Pretty amazing!

So in this spirit of the challenge, I refuse to rank these 19 awesome entries from 1st place through to number 19. It's just not what this is all about. Yes, there is a scoring rubric that was published - and yes it was used by me and a team of judges (and a HUUUGGE thank you to my judges for helping out!! Feel free to out yourselves in the thread if you like.). But honestly folks, there is no way I'm going to tell any one of you great builders and designers who took on a new challenge, and some really tough challenges, that your design sucks - cause it's just not true. And that's not what we are here to do - reference objectives above if you have any doubts.

So with that preamble behind us, let's get to the result categories.

  • First, there is a clear winner to this challenge - scoring far ahead of all other entries.
  • Second, there are a group of awesome planes that scored over 130 on the rubric.
  • Third, there are a group of great planes that didn't get over 130, but we still love.
  • And then there are a set of entries that flew, but who didn't release plans to the community yet, and thus scored in the lowest grouping.

And in traditional awards show fashion (and like Casey Kasem taught us), we're going to count 'em down to #1.

4th Place Entries

So first up, here is Category 4; the entries we loved, but who didn't release plans to the community yet. Posted in order of their challenge entry date.

Waffleman's Grumman XP-50 Skyrocket
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?36064-Mini-XP50-for-FTCC-World-War-Two-Challenge!

Come back and release plans for this!! You did a great job replicating the curves in what looks like a very simple to cut and assemble design. I love the way it looks, and it obviously performs great - so we all want to be able to build one!

Grifflyer & JimCR120's Grumman XF5F-1
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthre...an-XF5F-1-Skyrocket-by-Grifflyer-and-JimCR120

Another great looking build that deserves to have plans released! Love how you captured the feel of the plane, and the easy access to batteries in the nacelles and central layout of radio gear makes it a nice plane to service at the field. So great job Grifflyer - and get in there and help him out Jim! Can't leave a boy hanging like that! :p

TaleSpin's Convair XB-53 (formerly XA-44)
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?36281-FTFC-18-WWII-Corvair-XB-53-designed-by-TaleSpin

This was a very cool subject. The forward wing sweep is a real eye-catcher. The shaping of the fuselage, and the skill used to attain it were quite impressive. It would be nice to see some plans, as we are sure that there are some wannabe builders that would love to tackle your design!

Namactual's FH-1 Phantom
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthre...I-FH-1-Phantom-designed-by-Namactual&p=361216

We just knew this would fly and you didn't disappoint! It looked pretty good as is, but also looked as though there was a little more performance asking to be eaked out! Solid construction and we liked that you went with the more symetrical airfoil. Not many do that, and it's a nice touch for the models intended for more advanced pilots. Please make some plans Dude! This is a jet that many could like.

FoamyDM's LPL Ushakov "Flying Submarine"
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?36977-FTFC-18-WWII-Ushakov-LPL-Flying-Submarine-by-FoamyDM

This build thread and project is legendary! A very ambitious design, and to take on the flying and submersible aspects of the design too - just awesome! The scale look of the plane is beautiful, and we really really want you to release some alpha or beta plans! The history references here are fascinating, as is the knowledge bridge to model submarining (I had no idea this was such a cool thing). There are some aerodynamic challenges still to work out and we all want to see this succeed in the air and the water - and we know you'll get there too! We really want to check this out at a Flite Fest this year!

320dude's North American F-82 Twin Mustang
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?37746-FTFC-18-WWII-F-82-Twin-Mustang-designed-by-320dude

Love the approach of extending a proven design for this! And the final result performs very well. Looks like a very stable flyer, and a great design for flyers who want something unusual at the field!

J-MaxRC's Borovkov-Florov-D
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthre...rov-D-designed-by-J-MaxRC&p=380968#post380968

The contest went on so long without hearing from you, I was afraid we lost you man! But you kicked out an amazing entry at the last minute (to us at least)! This plane flies so much awesome I can't even English! Excellent video documentation of the project, it's history, where you're going next, and some truly excellent flight characteristics - and a great landing too! And it's got some amazing glide too - you really have a good airfoil design based on the length of those glide tests. I'd say your first version here is a total success - now it's time to get version two rolling and share some plans with the rest of us so we can build along too! And from seeing how well your gear was designed & built on the big bomber you brought to FliteFest last year, I'm fully confident you'll figure out the retract geometry on this model :)

Anyone notice anything odd about this list? Like how they are all entries from the Allies team? Wonder what's up with that... :p

3rd Place Entries

Next are a group of truly Great FT Community Designed Planes! From a technical scoring perspective, these all scored less than 130, but don't let that fool you. These designs are proven flyers - with plans released for others to build - and as far as I'm concerned they can all proudly claim to have come in 3rd place in this challenge :applause:

So again, in order of the entry signup date, here we go:

Team RockyBoy (Rockyboy & Psyborg & Igoo57 & jpot1)
Focke Wulf FW-42
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?35967-FTFC-18-WWII-Focke-Wulf-FW-42
Plans AND skins! Sure to have excellent variety in other builds. The fully-flying canard can be a tricky bit but the construction is simple and effective. Getting the aerodynamic design of a canard right out of the gate is a huge plus and shows a solid design with stable and highly maneuverable flight characteristics.

Fluburtur
Messerschmitt P.1110/II
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?35945-FFE-18-WWII-Messerschmitt-P-1110-II

It's amazing what can be done with Cardboard! Wonderful to have materials in use here for our friends around the world who don't have access to dollar tree foam board. Excellent design process, and really appreciate the calculations on intake / exhaust areas and the impact of different angled inlets on the air volume. Really shows us all real-world applicability of maths on hobby design! The stages of development and multiple prototypes shows a successfull design, and with a little bigger power plant this will scream across the sky again! And I really hope you come back to the printable retract design - the community needs this and you're on a great path!

Team Motherless Child (Slingshot & DamoRC)
Ohka 43(x)
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?36224-FTCC-18-Ohka-Model-43(x)-Team-Motherless-Child

Beautiful final model! Looks great and flys great too! Love the experimentation and calculations done with the EDF inlet sizing, leading to a very succesfull power setup that doesn't mess with the scale lines of the model too much. And a very nice job realizing the stability and stalling behavior could be addressed with some FT style under cambered wing time! The plans look great, and really appreciate the addition of the CAD and sketchup files too.

Dr. Looping Looie
Lippisch P13a
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthre...II-Lippisch-P13a-designed-by-Dr-Looping-Looie

Great job tackling a design that is anything but conventional! Loads of great source pictures and illustrations. Especially love the little details and functional components on this - the design of the inlets, great spring loaded landing skids, and awesome cockpit work! I'm sure we will see longer flight times now that you've got the launch cart ready to go!

Zephyr1
Ki-98 Mansyu
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?37247-FTFC%B418-WWII-Ki-98-Mansyu-designed-by-Zephyr1

A simple, straightforward, and good looking design! By sticking to basic easy to make shapes for most of the design, and strategicly using some curves, you've created a very easy to build plane that looks great! With a few notes added for things like a scale, CG, and battery placement information, I think you have a warbird design that would be great for a noobs 2nd or 3rd build. And with the pusher motor configuration is should be very easy on props new fliers too! We want more video of this in the air!

Arado Ar 555-3 Amerika Bomber
http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?37680-FTFC%B418-WWII-Arado-Ar-555-3-designed-by-Zephyr1

It's amazing how quickly this came together into an excellent flying plane! Great job capturing the feel of the design, and at a huge size too! Love the retracts - looks like they worked perfectly. And kudo's for figuring out PDF plans production on this one! We want an update on this over spring break too - did it get painted? Is it still meanacing Amerika from above?

Now here's another weird coincidence in the data... all of the 3rd place entries are on Team Luftwaffe!

2nd Place Entries

Here we are with a set of truly AWESOME planes, all scoring over 130 on the rubric. These designs are well referenced, are solidly designed, have great build instructions, and top notch plans ready for you to build! All of these builders can proudly claim they took 2nd place in the challenge!

These are ordered by entry date within the teams.

The steps you posted on the design and modeling process are excellent, and really show how to get that complicated round effect with our flat material! Excellent takeoff characteristics in all the versions you posted videos for - it only got squirrely when you poured on the power, and you did some excellent sleuthing and design work to overcome those tendencies in the final design. Also love that you added a tractor version for people who might want to build this beautiful model without going the EDF route. And providing plans for all of the versions to the community is appreciated!

Daimler Benz Project B (plus some extras)

Amazing crazy project! We got four airframe designs from this team, running the range from multi-engine brushless to EDF to brushed and free flight. Remarkable! The contrast of stability in the mothership with downright aggressive maneuverability in the EDF bomber was jaw dropping. Love the use of rocket rubes and balsa nose cones to bring some extra flexibility to traditional FT building techniques. The in flight separations all looked flawless on video, and really showcase the fun of multi-pilot flight systems. Appreciate the nice 3 views of the plans in addition to the DXF format outputs for anyone with CAD experience to use on CNC equipment.

Excellent research materials and reuse of proven design components used to get this off the ground! It looks very maneuverable and the combo motors sound so wicked whipping by! Love the plans and build instructions - really appreciate the component shopping list and clearly called out CG and fold style information. All in all, an excellent design!

An outstanding take on a very challenging project. Great job of replicating scale like stall characteristics too! ;-) We would have liked to have seen a stall test after you got the trim and CG problems worked out to know if the ship became more manageable. A really good job documenting your work. We're sure anyone willing to tackle this project will have a good foundation to work from with your plans and build log.

You took on a very tough challenge with this design, and we loved how you kept pushing through and learning at every step! The history clip was fascinating and much appreciated. And the plans quality is excellent! If Sponz ever needs to take an extended vacation, Flite Test needs to give you a call. And love that you tackled retracts as well. While we haven't yet seen what I'd call 'stable' flight from this scale version, I absolutely think you are on the right track!

And without further delay, I am thrilled to announce that with a decent lead in the scoring, the winner of Phase 1 of the FTFCC WW2 challenge is...

Vought XF5U "Flying Flapjack"

We're all suckers for a strange looking and well flying airplane. Y'all have certainly delivered one here. When we first saw the proposal for the XF5U, some of us said to ourselves, "That thing is either going to fly very well..... or be very interesting!" You delivered on both! :p Though a considerable departure from traditional FT build techniques, we really love the way you have adapted more traditional modeling construction techniques to foamboard and taught us all new skills with this design. And the detailed build instructions make this accessible to anyone familiar with FT build processes. The bonus 3D printed parts designs are just the cherry on top. The plans are top notch of course, we expected nothing less of Sponz :p Also appreciate Dale's layout advice to ensure the parts are cut to bend with the grain of the foam board for easy assembly. The end product is very elegant and we can't wait to see some of these all painted up and in the air at Flite Fest!

Excellent work gentlemen! :applause:

I want to thank you everyone for participating in this first part of the forum challenge, through both entries and encouraging friends in the build threads. It really has been a great experience.

And now it's time for everyone to get building on your entries for Part 2!! Remember, any design that was started in Phase 1 by any person is eligible for use in the Phase 2 In-Person activities. We just want to keep celebrating these great projects and have fun with some strange flying machines!

Is this the new Official Thread?
I'll be entering with the Grumman XP-50 Skyrocket.
I've already got a prototype for it, I started work when I saw the draft version of the this challenge.
Build thread is here: http://forum.flitetest.com/showthre...-World-War-Two-Challenge!&p=358956#post358956
Right now I'm just working on a mini 1/20th scale version, if I get it "completely done" while still having time left I'll move to a 1/10th scale version as well.

If we are starting teams and stuff we totally need Team Luftwaffe! Or Mannschaft Luftwaffe as it would be in German.

All German planes makers and pilots are invited! Our goal: win the war with out cutting edge end-war plane tech that totally doesn't rely on strategic ressources!
