Hi Dave
Im up in Scotland and just use foamboard from Hobbycraft,Im getting 3 for 2 at £8.
I think you're right our foamboard is heavier and definately thicker,it makes no difference mate just adjust your cuts accordingly on any folds and you will be fine.
As for the glossy finish it makes for a great finish on the painting

this flew beautifully until i planted it into the ground and it weighed over 2lb :)

I'm having similar problems here in Germany. The only kind of foamboard I could find is called "Kappa". I have yet to weigh and measure it, but I think it's DIN A0 size.

Only upside is, the manufacturing company is just a 50 km away. I can get second quality boards for a fraction of the cost. I think I've paid 1 Euro per board because the dimensions weren't exact enough to be sold.

I wonder what the FT crew has planned as they mentioned to be working on distributing the original stuff worldwide. Perhaps HobbyKing can add it to their warehouses all over the world?

Hi Balu,

don't use Kappa Board, go to modulor.de seach for "Foamboard weiss, weisser Rand" . You can also try foamborden.de.

Hi Guys,

I am New to the site and hobby for that matter. I have had a bit of a trawl through other threads and I was wondering where people picked up their supplies (electrical and bits and bobs) from in the UK?

I am currently cutting and joining the plans for the power pod and then potentially the Bloody Wonder V2 and was looking for a bit of advice on what sort of components to go with. I am in need of a transmitter, receiver, ESC, servos, batteries, charger and props. Any advice or thoughts would be grateful!!

Cheers

Hi FurryJock. Just been through same process myself. Here's what I did:

Foamboard from Hobby Craft. As already mentioned above £8 for 3 A0 sheets. It is heavier but my first plane in the air so far (FT Flyer) flies really well.
Transmitter - search eBay for spektrum DX4E. You can get them brand new (from models sold complete with transmitter where the shop upgrade the customer) for £30 with free shipping.
I got all other electronics from HobbyKing using their UK warehouse. Delivery takes 3 or 4 days.

As an alternative, there is someone on eBay doing starter packs of 24gram motor, speed control and prop for about £20.

Maiden of Old Fogey today, hopefully. Will see how that heavy foam board works on that one!

Hi Furry Jock,fellow scot :)
I'd go for a Spektrum DX6i,far more versatile a beginners hand set for under £100.
As for electrical check out http://www.giantshark.co.uk/,it's where I get most of my electrics and batteries.
Check out the Gens Ace batteries too.well worth a look and incredibly cheap.
Good luck :)

Cheers mate for the advice! Will see if I can pick up a DX6i on eBay. I will also check it out that site. How many batteries would you suggest starting with?

Hi FJ,
I suppose that depends on what your planning on building. If your just starting out then I'd get at least a couple of batteries and a decent charger.

Have a look at these dude, thats the charger I use and those batteries would be more than ample for the likes of the 'Duster'
which is an amazing little plane too fly :)

Hi FJ,
Well by the looks of things you're off to a good start.Doesn't hurt to shop around and the more you look the more you will find a bargain :).All of the above looks fine to me mate, depends on your budget really however if your just starting in the hobby I'd recommend not spending a fortune until you decide if it's for you or not :).
Personally I like Giantshark for my bits, their stock levels aren't as good as they used to be but delivery times is usually next day on stocked items so I cant really comment on HK items but as for GS...I cant fault them or their items.
btw,I'm in Dundee mate and as for flying,my usual spot isn't going too well atm so I'm looking for a new patch, you ?
cheers

Cheers Scottie,

Seems everything that I tried to order at GS was out of stock! Haha, just my luck! Waiting game....

I am down in Edinburgh, so I will need to head out of town a bit I think. Maybe to the borders!

Keep you posted!

Cheers

Hi FJ
theres a spot I've seen a few times down your way that I thought would be a great place to fly.
Down the Jedburgh road then turn off for Coldstream and a couple miles up the road too your right...well trust me you will know it when you see it :) not so sure the cows will appreciate the low passess tho :p .

Hope you're getting on well with that hobbycraft foamboard. Did get my Old Fogey airborne - not as stable as FT flyer, a little tail heavy I think. Once you're ready to fly be careful checking your CG - the heavier UK foamboard seems to result in a different balance so worth checking before you take that first throw into the unknown...

I use Hobbycraft board too. They seem to have changed it recently, I find it slightly better but not as good as the Adams board appears to be. I have found that it is better to make several shallow cuts rather than try to go through in one cut. As the paper does not want to peel off, you can't clean the folds with your thumbnail as Josh Bixler does. I have found the best way is to open the fold over another piece of board and then scrape the paper with a knife. Hope this helps someone, although you may have worked it out for yourselves.

Anybody got any more tips?

I like to use the foam sanding blocks from B&Q.They come in a variety of shapes ,sizes and grades, the 45 degree mitre one is especially good.
Worth a look considering the price.
