Chattering motor?

I was trying trying to help someone with their plane yesterday and couldn't figure out this problem.

His motors would chatter on throttle up. He can get them started if he moves the stick very slowly. Once started, they are fine, but if he kills the throttle, they will chatter again.

I use the plural for the motor, because it's happening with two different motors. They are Emax 1806 that he bought from Flite Test. They are connected to different brand ESCs. He is using a Spektrum Dx6i.

Anyone had this happen? Any suggestions?

2 things here... first, recalibrate the ESC on both of them and see if that sorts it. If not, it's likely a bad connection between the motor and ESC... bullet connectors? see if any of them are loose or go in and resolder them (or at least reflow the solder on the current joints).
