Fun with Aura5

So I took an FT mini Scout that has been through the ringer with several crashes, I cut ailerons into the wings and added an Auar5. The first few flights with stabilization were good. Then I saw Josh video about flaperons. I did mine with a 3 pos switch: 0 = flaps up, 1 = takeoff flaps, 2= landing flaps. Also set flight mode 2 to 6 axis with roll angle at 180 degrees and -180 degrees. So landing with flaps is awesome and rolling in flight mode 2 is pretty trick. Try it.

So I built up a new FT Scout. I call it Scout II. Added the flapperons and had 4 good flys. Today, another good fly but noticed substantial wing flex in flight. I see stressed wings upon landing. Adding ailerons seems to be too much. Time to design and add support spars.

Wing reinforcements added top and bottom of wing. Glue and tape foam board and added a canopy. Now to get flying again.

Show a view of your landing gear setup if you get a chance.
I followed the build video but modified the attach. I glued the foam and gear to a thin piece of plywood, 1/16”. Then put two skewers through fuselage about 1/2” up from bottom. Add a left and right side of foam for positioning ease and two rubber bands.

Always nice to see new ideas, I have not put gear on any planes since my first scout. Thanks.

Thanks @MacClarkNC, all good info. I just got my 1st Aura5 and am about to install it for - hopefully - a maiden flight next Saturday. My planes are really small lately and they can't take any wind. I think the Aura will fix everything.
Hey you've got a good looking plane there. (y)

Thanks. I enjoy the FT planes. I flew the Scout II this morning and the wing reinforcements held up. Loops and snap rolls and landing flaps all produce some good stresses. I have almost lost a few foam planes in gusty winds. I was giving full down and the plane was going straight up!

Here are my Aura5 Flapperon config notes.

First I followed Josh’s video:

Note: I have a Spektrum DX6 programmable xmtr. On the DX6 assign a 3 position switch to Ch6/Aux1 (I use switch D as it is just above the throttle) then go into Digital Switch Setup, select your switch (I used D) and set the values for each position as follows: 0=-51%, 1=50%, 2=100%. These values do two things, they tell theAura5 what position the switch is in and the value drives the flap throw. So -51% = Aura Switch Pos. 2 and is flaps UP, 50% is Aura Switch Pos.1 and about 1/3 flaps down, 100% is Aura Switch Pos.0 about 2/3 flap down. Now go to your PC and open Aura config tool, connect to your Aura5 and power it on too so you can capture live data (this makes adjustments a breeze). For Mix 1, select Mix Switch Channel as Ch6/Aux1 and set Switch Type to 3 Pos. Switch. Make Mix 1 Active in positions 0, 1and 2. I set Mix Rate Negative at -125% and Mix Rate Positive at 75%. For other Mixes, make the Aura Switch Pos. 2 inactive. Remember to write to Aura each time you make a change and then check that change with xmtr control.

Have fun
