Looking to fly the FT Explorer as a UAV

Hey guys. As a Civil Air Patrol cadet project, we'd like to fly an RC plane as a UAV. What all would we need to send the FT Explorer up in the fashion? I'm thinking a DragonLink, and a 1.3GHZ video setup at a minimum. What hardware would work best? What would we need from the FAA?

I've started messing with an explorer, putting a flight controller in it sounds like a fun idea one day. Any flight controller with an airplane profile should work (Ardupilot, APM, Multiwii). The FAA under 107 now require that ops be conducted within line of sight, going beyond would need waver applications.
