New to RV planes

Good afternoon to all- I watched a Flite Test member flying his plane at a park in Phoenix, and he showed me and my grandson about the plane, the controls, and the aircraft build.
I would appreciate your advice as far as hardware, plans, and aircraft selection goes.
I am pretty god at building things- I build wooden boats and most of them float well. I would like to build an airplane- and have it fly to my command.
