Once I had plugged the servo cables of the wing of my little borther wrong. So at the take off it just went straight into the ground instead of straight up! (That was actually 2 days ago :) )

My only flying buddy, (the one that relived my interest in planes) still has issues with pre-flight tests, especially forgetting servo orientation. I'll have to print him a checklist :)

Hello everybody! Decided to join the Flitetest forums, since Im a big fan of the show :) so whats a better way to introduce myself than telling you all about my achievements? Well of course to tell you about my mistakes :D

So I started flying RC planes around April, it all started when I built my RC Hovercraft, powered by 70mm EDF unit, and well... to keep this short, I thought to myself "what if I put wings on this?". So I spent few weeks in February in the internet searching for information and I finally came into the conclusion that it would be insane to try and start this flying hobby with 70mm EDF as my motor. But I did.

I choose the one plane I found most people had put 70mm EDFs on, the F22 Raptor. And the one that caught my eye the most was the RcPowers F22 design and I tried to make one myself (short on money, so I just made my own plans). So I got the foam, the motor and all the electronics and started to put my plane together.

I finally got the plane together and it actually flew :D I was happily surprised about that, but the sheer amount of power was too much for me and I ended up smashing it quite a bit, but I knew that this was not going to be a easy path. And finally it came to a final stop when my, many many times repaired and nurtured, plane finally made its final 100kmh inverted full throttle nosedive to the ground.

And after getting over the crash it was time to make my another mistake. I decided to buy a normal propeller motor and replace the broken EDF with that. So I bought a motor that was as near the specs of the EDF motor (not good idea, since EDFs are inefficient, prop motors are not) so I got this: RcTimer 3536-1250kv on a 10x6 prop and 4s pack producing 750W of power, and you can imagine what that can do in hands of noobie :D

Well as you could have guessed I did not get proper flight time with my new plane, it was just too darn powerful! with EDF I didnt get used to such torque nor torque roll effect. After realizing that I was pretty down, I had thought that I could handle the advanced stuff, but then I realized that I couldnt. So After a week or so I decided upon what to do next...

I built a 32" BYOB, BackYard Outdoor Bipe. It was really the plane that I finally was able to fly for a whole battery pack without crashing it once! And the flight characteristics, oh I fell in love with the slowfly I could dod with it :) It was by then that I realized I couldnt turn back, I was hooked! That little plane really was my "new first plane".

After that I have built a Piaget aerobatic plane and tried out some 3D with it and a 1200mm wigspan FireFly and a trainer for my friend. I have also learned so much about this hobby this summer and I have so much plans, so many planes to build, so many ideas to try out.

And when Im not flying, Im on the forums (RcPowers and RcGroups) learning from the Rc community, since I have no friends who fly or Rc clubs around here, so forums are the only place I can seek tutoring and advices and now that I understand somethings, even give out some :)

Oh, and also Im a big fan of Flitetest on youtube! one of my favorite Rc shows and definitely the most entertaining one! ;) I hope the community on these forums is just as great as their show is :D

Btw, nowadays Im flying 50-100 watt planes with 2 cells (aside from the FireFly) and Im really enjoying it. After couple of these, next Im aiming for the Parkjet size planes and FPV. So Im kinda building up my experience so that I can someday fly my first plane EDF F22 again :D Funny right?

My dad who has been flying for 50 years STILL cannot get it through his head not to firewall the throttle on takeoff. He glides around and in a turn with the wind still jams it forward and damn near tip stalls everytime. I have a vid I'll upload it tonight. You'll laugh

I was just getting confidence with my first plane (a modified Stunt King), which is not a particularly easy plane to train yourself with. (It's similar to a FunJet) It was a beautiful late afternoon/dusk. A nice breeze, cotton ball clouds all around, and deep blue skies. Commercial planes were flying nearby on approach to the Austin airport. It was magic hour. Everything was perfect. AND, I was having a great time flying. The sun began to set and the scene only became more beautiful. Crazy orange sun rays shooting from behind clouds. I thought... I really wish I could share this with my wife and son (4yr old) who stayed home.

That's when I got the great idea to make a video. I landed, grabbed the camera, and devised a plan. A stupid plan. I thought, well once I'm going, I often leave the throttle set and just fly around. Easy, I'll get it up in the air, grab the camera with my left hand and fly the plane with my right. All good until I decide to look at the camera to see if the plane was in frame. I kid-you-not... I glanced at the camera for a SECOND... and then looked up just in time to see the plane nose diving and BAMM! DUST CLOUD - parts flying.

I later watched the video, and even in the beginning I say. "This is probably a really bad idea..."

It was. And the video was worthless as well.

But you got to love these foamies... some gorilla glue, bamboo skewers, and toothpicks later, the plane was back in action.

Tim, your Dad's reaction was hilarious, combined with your shadow of putting your hand on your head in dismay.

I'm imagining his thought is... oh, what on earth just happened?? and you're like... AGAIN, you have to be freaking kidding me!!

So funny.

You guys are awesome! Facepalm all the way. Even today, he flew a plane that I told him was VERY tailheavy, he said it was fine---not so much. He saved it-thank goodness!

The FUNNY thing is, this is the man that has desiinged, built, and flown 3 custom engines for various RC planes with 100% success. He is a MUCH better engineer than a pilot

Indeed! He's the mastermind behind those awesome engines! (Or is it you too?)

On my first flight ever with my super cub I forgot to turn off the act. (many people told me it doesn't work good it just stalls out the plane on a windy day) I wasn't paying attention to the wind and I was over some trees (40 foot tall). I guess you guys know where this is going but I got it stuck in the tree about 30 feet up. Good thing my Dad has a extension ladder so we got it back.
super cub act+ tall trees+ windy day= scary first flight

Hehe, glad you got it back.
But I always find it funny to look back at where you started and then look where youre at now! Then just try to imagine where you will be in a few years!

I remember, i went to Conrad, a common german hobby shop and wanted to buy a RTF Christen Eagle Foamie. The guy looked at me and said: you're a trained pilot, don't you? And i said: well, i have a little XTwin... And then he laughed at me :( and sold me the Reely Wild Hawk :). Only rudder and elevator. I searched for a nice big hayfield and launched the Wild Hawk. Well, i suppose you guess what happened... of course it crashed hard and the nose broke into pieces. I thought: Oh my god, look at this brandnew plane - now i have to get a new one. But then i was looking for some wild hawk stuff at Youtube and so i came to Dave Powers and other stuff and from there on i say: if it broke in less than 5 pieces, it's as good as new :)

Of course, afterwards i went to Conrad again and bought a simulator for 20 bucks - which i strongly recommend to any newbie. So the learning curve should not be that expensive steep.

i lost my supercub up a tree above a main road :-( my wing struts failed and my wings just about folded like rabbit ears and it darted into the top of the tree! its a shame as it was a great fun relaxing flyer!

Well I started flying 3 months ago with a AXN Floater-Jet. But before that I had flown Quadcopter and a little bit of Heli on the Simulator, 40 mins Heli hopping on the ground and 3 hours Quadcopter flying (Basic flying with no crash) and 2 hours Plane Simulator (Big turns and landing). The first time was an okay flight. Made high big turns and on the third try to land I came in low enough to land (that thing floats and floats). Well I thought "That was easy. Let's make some tighter turns". Crashed 2 mins later because I lost too much height on the "tight turn". Well I still have the floater and only crashed 2 1/2 times more. The second time was because I had some glue on the elevator control rods and the 1/2 crash was because I didn't want to land on some dirt and thought I could make a go-around. But because the prop is above I only lost a small piece of foam on the elevator (Quick fix). On the third crash I flew in the night in a tree. I was sure that the plane was in front of the tree until it "stopped" flying and stayed there. 3 months after the starting the hobby I already have 3 planes. Only the AXN got some Crashes but the Kinetic doesn't have batteries yet. I need those batteries in the DE Warehouse and a Tech One Angel, and those Tricopter Parts.... I guess thats my story until now but I am totally hooked.

Haha, I can imagine you being kinda suddenly surprised when the plane just "stoppen" in air. Or to sugarcoat it rather say it "parked" in the air :D:D

At the age of 8, i decided it would be a good idea to take my father's SIG Senior trainer out for a section of continuous loops..and..well...Rest In Pieces SIG Senior...haha
