Old Fogey Modifications

Hi Everyone,

I was curious to know how some folks have made modifications to their Old Fogey ? And if you did make some mods, what were they ? Curious minds need to know. :) I thought someone made a bush style old fogey. But not really to sure.

I've built six Old Fogeys in the past three years, it's an awesome design for relaxing evening flying!
I think the most important mod you can make is to reinforce the landing gear BBQ skewers. I take popsicle sticks and drill holes for the BBQ skewers to pass through and then glue the popsicle sticks to the outside of the airframe. It spreads the load on those BBQ skewers and adds an extra layer of material.
While you're at it, reinforcing all of the BBQ skewer holes is a good idea. I use little squares of old gift cards with a hole drilled in the middle, glued on the inside of every BBQ skewer hole.

Thank you for the ideas. I have used old gift cards in the past.

Has anyone relocated the tail of the plane higher off the ground ? I understand that the fuselage of the plane would also need to change.

I made a fogey recently where I reduced the height of the fuselage by about an inch and decreased the H-stab angle of incidence by about 3 degrees. It didn't do a whole lot to the flight characteristics, still a good amount of dutch roll present and I still trimmed the elevator about the same as my other Fogeys. It also made the battery area a little less accessible. That said, it definitely looks better in my opinion.
If you raise the tail any, let us know how it goes, I'm curious if it will affect the dutch roll tendencies.
