Taming The Yak - TIPS

Today we got to play with the Yak 54 180. This is an amazing, fast, high energy design. To the untrained eye this might seem like a good beginner plane with it's cool looks, small size, and the AS3X system. But don't be fooled like Josh Scott was!

We brought the Yak (a backyard flyer mind you) to Pinnacle Sports because IT'S COLD!

This is were Josh Scott learned that he was ultimately going to be flying the Yak inside.

But before he did, Bixler showed how you can use dual rates and expo to help a fast flyer calm down a bit.

Starting with 100/30 (100% rates and 30% expo) the Yak was extremely snappy. Not quite what we were looking for.

Next, Bixler went with 65/30 which was better, but still didn't hit the mark.

Ultimately he found that 50/40 was the sweet spot and handed the controls to Josh Scott, which led to a lot of this...

After a "few" crashes he did get a good loop around the arena but the bottom line is, just like a wild Yak, it wasn't ment to be contained.

Outside this plane performed like a dream. To tame the wild beast, you must set it free!

If you ever have a plane that just doesn't feel right, don't blame your skills as a pilot. Instead, play with your dual rates, expo, and trim to make the plane work for you instead of against you.
