The paint is not even when you get close. Notice how I took a shot from far back? It really is hard. The upshot here is that I've got a Sikorsky to paint yellow as well. I'm thinking this was a good heads up. Time to go rattle can shopping for that project.

Weight. Doculam weighs about a 1/4 of what normal iron on films. With how much paint I'm adding I think I'll honestly break even at this point. Not quite sure what too do.

The call was made to not do all the details on this build. Its just a for fun one. When I do a 1/4 scale version one day I will go all-out. Still waiting on Adrian Page to get his back into production. I really want one of his. Until then I think I will just settle with some streaks of paint. It will irritate me but that's not what this plane was for. It was a fun distraction over the holiday. Its time to close it up and move on back tot he build off.

Looks really nice from here. Get the decals on and lets take another look. How does one get ahold of Callie for decals?

She doesn't have every airplane design, but for those she has it's quick and easy to get something made. My Cessna 310 from Dynam is one she didn't have, so I sent her pictures and measurements to work from. I was very happy with the results! Original colors with the plane were too light in my opinion, so I had her focus on the dark blue for the sides and trim.

FLIGHT REPORT!!!

Well, with the wind cooperating I went out to the field. Did all my usual checks, made sure defelctions were correct and the way I wanted them. Did a run-up and range check.

I put her on the field and started a run-up to take off and hit a bump and with the tussle I throttled down quick to have a light nose-over. No big deal. I reset on a smoother patch of grass and decided to give more throttle to overcome any more bumps. After a short roll-out she was up and slightly eased back on the elevator. Rolling left slightly, I adjusted the roll trim. on the down-wind leg I noticed she was not tracking entirely straight so I coupled some right rudder. Up-wind looked straight. Tracking perfect and making good time at half throttle I took her up high on the next down-wind leg. I eased back on the throttle and started to feed in the elevator. NEVER once did she drop a wing... I knew I was safe for landing. I eased off on the elevator to see a sharp nose drop and fed in the throttle. I did a couple more laps testing the speed envelope and did a couple of low-ish passes to test for abnormal noises to make sure things were holding tight in the airframe. Things were good at all times and no whistles that were distracting either. I did not do any fancy maneuvers, just testing for stability and flight worthiness. She really looks the part. I like the speed envelope. On WOT she really cruises and really looks like she is going for a speed run. lowering the throttle back to half she just goes where I tell her to. Saw that 3 minutes was up so its time to land. Gave a good approach and eased back the throttle but not to stop the prop. You want airflow over these short-coupled planes to keep up the tail authority. She settled in well and bounced twice then on the ground she rolled for about 4 feet and nosed-over. No damage and nerves were shot. Inspected for any lose connections and she was fine. Battery was quite warm but I knew I would be pushing this battery for that amount of time. 3:24 total flight time and I could not be happier. I think she can handle more weight with the extra paint I'll need as well as the decals applied. ESC was warm but not hot. Motor was as well and no bad smells. The prop's pitch is set at 5 (lowest setting) and I think I'll keep her there. I like how it performs. I do not see any issues with power at all so I'm convinced that this is a good solution. I've got the battery back on the charger now and I'll report back with power consumption. I'm thinking I could go with the ZIPPY compact 4000 for longer flights and a little more punch. As it is a 2200 will fit the bill for a quick flight.

So that flight was 1792mAh. That means 408mAh remaining of the pack. A little over the 80% rule but ok. So, estimate that at 3.5 minutes of flight...3.5/60=0.0583 hours * 1792 =an average discharge rate of 30.7A/hour. My battery is rated at 40C and a 2.2Ah pack=88amps/hour discharge. So not taxing the battery by any means. With the flight time given (1792mAh used/3.5 minutes) that is roughly 512mA/minute. So if I go with a 4000mAh pack that is (4000*0.8 [80% rule here folks])/512=~6.3 minutes. Say 6 to be conservative considering additional weight from the pack. I think its a good call. I usually keep to 5 minute flight times because I usually get bored.

Time to shop.

Edit:

To be considered:

286-207=79g or 2.8 ounce difference. I have plenty of room to shift the battery aft to accommodate the CG. 4*25=100amps/hour discharge rate so I'm better than the maiden battery. I think we have a winner. At $27 its kind of a no-brainer.

Well, I'll tell you that the paint is finally going my way now. More paint to come and I will post it then. I've not touched the bottom side so I can take some close-up shots to show how bad it really looked. Then I can go over the application of the vinyl. I do look forward to moving back to the J-22. Final work on the house to be completed this week and then I can get my basement shop back in order... this time with more heat!

So I am home overseeing work done to my house... That means I can finish the bee! The attached image shows how bad the base yellow went onto the primer. Then trying to brush over top did not do much either. Basically the lesson learned here is if you are going to use a light top color... use a light primer.

More pics to follow.

Done... mostly.

Do I have wrapped the plane in the vinyl. The only colors I had to paint here are yellow and black. The blacks do not entirely match. Again... I'm going for sport scale here. Just want a super fun plane to throw around and now I do. The wheel pants were the most difficult as I really had to wrap and stretch the vinyl. There is currently one issue that I need to address. While covering I noticed an aileron was freely moving. The epoxy has come loose for the control horn. I will need to address that.

I also looked at my current battery inventory. I have a 4000mAh 3S battery that does not have many flights on it. It is only 5 oz heavier than the 2200 so I'm going to balance the plane with it and give it a shot. Since 3 minutes of flying time is just not long enough to get bored for me.

With this post I am officially calling this build DONE. 2 months is not bad folks. Any questions feel free to ask. Moving back to the J-22 now for the build off.

Paint issues or not, that looks pretty damn nice with the graphics installed! If I had time for yet another build I'd probably have to order one of those kits.

Thank you all! I addressed the aileron. I think I neglected to wipe the tip of the rod with alcohol to remove dust and oil prior to installation. I removed the aileron and fixed it. Its curing now. I also went ahead and balanced with the big battery. It works with it all the way up to the firewall.
