I had looked at building one awhile back but it looked quite an ambitious project and then there was the cost of the electronics, in particular the retractable landing gear.

Recently a friend and fellow club member become interested in the project and wanted me to just print the airframe as he doesn't have a 3dprinter. He would purchase the electronics so I've started to print some of the airframe as a test.

There is an issue with sourcing the landing gear parts as robart.com no longer makes landing gear.
  • Retracts(optional): Robart #532RSE 75 deg Reverse Electric Main Retracts (x2)
  • Robart #660 7/16" dia Straight RoboStrut.
What I found is they sold that part of their business to Highvizrc.com although they don't have a website yet, just this e-mail address.

info@highvizrc.com

There is an option to have fixed main landing gear but the struts are still needed.

I have most of the body and main wing printed. I’ve just been to busy to print. I was going to the fixed gear because of the cost. The carbon fiber gets a little pricey too. Thankfully i sourced all of that a couple months ago but still pricey.

Its a good idea to go with the fixed landing gear, at least initially but were you able to source these struts as I understand that they are still needed for the fixed landing gear but are no longer listed on robart.com

No but i was looking at the free flight b-24 that a lot of the electronics are sourced from and that got me thinking about other large bombers and possibly “strategically transferring“ to the b-17. I ave like 4 builds going on right now so of course i am getting very little done on all of them. the b-17 is kind of stalled due to motors/escs x4 🤣

On the rcgroups forum, you have over 40 pages of information on how to build this model:

It's an amazing model, a bit expensive to build, but it attracts everyone's attention at the airfield. It's the king of printed planes!
