Attack Drone????

The one problem is that i see something like this getting quite out of hand. Maybe in a situation with a guy who is flying around the airport repeatedly and the airport allows other hobbyists to knock him out of the sky. but otherwise even if it seems like a a quad is breaking the law you can still be liable for hitting his drone.

True.

However, any government solution will also get quite out of hand, be far more expensive, less effective, and include home raids and guns. I say, let the privateer market figure it out. We'll be safer and it will cost less in the long run.

We have similar legislation coming in November 2919, all quads over 250g will require registration and a test.
None of that will deter misuse, since if you are going to break bigger laws (like flying drugs into prisons, violating controlled airspace etc) you are going to give zero poops about registering or a test.
The vehicle plaguing Gatwick is a large hexcopter with high level kit on, as well as an unconfirmed DJI alike. It’s been sighted again tonight and they have closed the runway.
No idea wether the reputed military countermeasures were actually there or wether the media was fed that line.
Getting local hobbyists to chase it would be much cheaper, faster and safer! Like that plan but it seems the authorities are determined to do this the hard way.

Maybe airports could use non-lethal rubber bullets for handguns, pistol caliber carbines, and shotguns (slugs + buckshot loads). They weigh less and move relatively slow.

The system deployed there is a localised signal jammer, from what has been leaking out in the better part of the press. The strategy seems to keep it off the perimeter whilst trying to triangulate and catch the operator(s).

If it continues or reoccurs perhaps the answer is to declare such illegal and intentional drone misuse be considered as an act of Terrorism and use the FULL weight of civil and military responses, (including lethal force if necessary), to solve the issue and do so publicly so that the true deterrence value can be realized!

Have fun!

As for shotguns, I'm a little leery of that. Lead goes up, lead has to come down. It's possible to hit a bystander with lead when trying to take down the drone, which is why I suggested ribbons that would get tangled in the props - if it hits a human, no harm no foul. :)

Shot doesn't carry very far. You just need to be mindful of the direction that you are shooting. It wouldn't be a problem for a moderately skilled shooter.

Two people arrested today. No more info yet. Caught by a witness seeing a guy packing up two drones near the perimeter.

That's interesting, where did you hear that? I heard it was a local arrested in Crawley, either way an arrest means nothing, the Air Force bought in an Aeroscope so this could just be a case of them arresting the first person who fired up a DJI product in the local area, mine is staying in its box until this has all blown over lol.

To all the people who suggested recruiting the local FPV crowd to bring it down, I suggested this Thursday to an active police officer (local Bobby here in Surrey) and nearly got myself arrested in the process, i even offered to give them a battered up old bloody wonder to use, but they refused - to them we are the enemy, they were offered help from one of the companies on the Manor Royal Estate (next to the airport) who specialise in anti-drone tech and told them no thanks we have this under control (yeah right), most of the police involved in this have an astronomical belief in their own abilities and refused all help that was offered, the commander didn't even realise you or I could "tune in" to the FPV frequency if it was a regular one and follow it back, they are that clueless and asking for help from the local model flying community (there are three clubs within a stones throw of Gatwick) is the last thing they would do, honestly I think we are prime suspects even though it was obviously not a hobbiests or a kid with a new toy.

I honestly wouldn't be suprised to find this arrest is nothing more than the first poor sap to turn on a DJI product locally, I was changing out my camera on my whoop in the kitchen last night and within 5 minutes the copper chopper was hovering over my house, i think it was just luck as they seem to be chasing someone in a car and moved off long before I turned the camera off, but it scared the crap out of me at first.

That’s a shame they didn’t listen to local companies and the hobby community. It could have saved a lot of time and money.
It also seems the government refused to deploy the RAF and army teams immediately too. Bloody good job there was no terrorist intent in this incident because the response so far has not inspired much confidence.

I would not be surprised if it is even adopted by terrorists in the future because the response was so dangerously tardy and misguided. A poor reflection on the so called homeland security departments in all their forms!

LOL well those arrested and named, photographed and splashed across the front page of every newspaper in the UK yesterday whilst being labelled terrorists and morons, have now been released without charge and PC Incompetent is at pains to say they are no longer suspects.

1) and the Police wonder why nobody co-operates or has respect for them.
2) I hope the couple sue the Police and papers into oblivion.
3) I hope they're a bit more careful if all they're doing is rounding up model flyers in the local area, some are 80+ and would probably die of fright if PC Incompetent kicked their door in.

What an utter clutterfluck. Both the Surrey and Sussex Police forces have shown how utterly incompetent they are.

Something I just heard was they let the people go because while they're "prime suspects" we're locked in cells, the drone turned up again yesterday and was downed by whatever defences they had running.
